I bought a bunch of silver plated gravy ladles at an auction and all but one are black with tarnish. The clean one is as heavy as the rest, and is marked on the reverse Colonial Silver
. Is it plate?

If it is not stamped "sterling" and or "925," you can assume that it is silver plate. I didn't look up their marks, but if this is the Colonial Silver Company (and you need to check that), their cutlery was all silver plate.

Thanks, Maxine. I knew you'd know. My silverplate book didn't have Colonial listed in the silver company listings.

The Colonial Silver company is listed on the 925-1000 site, but I didn't check the marks or info.
