Any info appreciated. Given to my late father by a grad student circa the 50s or 60s.

Thanks

Just a friendly alert for alan@ebay who asked in a recent thread: " I wasn't aware there was an issue with photos appearing upside down, can you provide any examples so that I can work with our platform vendor to have this resolved?"

Thanks,

Wish I had some information on the artist. All I remember is that my dad said it was a gift from a student. This picture hung in my parents hallway for as long as I can remember - so it predates the mid 60s. As a boy, I always assumed the student painted the picture, but I don’t have any real justification for that. During the 50s and 60s, my father was teaching linguistics and semantics at the post-graduate level. He had a number of students from other countries working on their PhDs.

From your response, I’m assuming the picture is unsigned? Wasn’t sure what the vertical writing on the left of the watercolor signified.

Trying to upload the picture of the writing, in hopes it will be oriented correctly this time.

The red mark at the bottom is called a "chop mark".

I had great luck with a Chinese watercolor last year by contacting a Chinese professor at a local university who was able to identify the artist. He was very helpful and enjoyed seeing the watercolor.

Perhaps there's something like that near you?

Interestingly enough, mine had an abundance of black marks above the chop mark that neither the professor nor a specialist at Christies could decipher. I don't know if that will be the case with your piece, just thought I'd mention it.

above the chopmark are 2 kansii characters ,which is the name of the artist.

he looks like a professional, may be google modern artist and see if there is more than one painting with such characters.

or take it to a Chinese art gallery or ask someone from Taiwan

Free ship, thanks for the additional info! Does a chopmark typically include the artist name and/or date?
