Resolved! Wooden Japanese Dog Tag or Good Luck Amulet

I recently got this with a lot of military items. I've seen similar items shown as from anything from a late WWII soldiers ID tag to an amulet for good luck. A translation of the writing might shed some light. Any thoughts?
