error identification

The last "8" in the date looks to have issues.  Can anybody tell me something about it?

Looking at the 1st 8 there seems to be a continuation of the hit the second 8 took. Does not appear to be a damaged die. Post mint damage IMO.

I see what you mean. What would cause the inside circle to deform into a "D" ?

Southwest raised portion of the round 8 deformed, didn't scrape off (some malleability) and the "arc" shape pushed inward and it now resembles a D to some extent. That's what happened.

This happened after the mint. I notice the doubleing on the first 8 but there is NO doubleing on the 17 Not an error. You can also look this up on the CONECA website. If it's an error you will find it there. Good luck!
