I have a Trade Dollar. There is a stamp running along the backside of the pedestal on which LIBERTY is seated. It appears that there are some Roman Numerals almost scrated in all the way to the rim from about 1 o'clock to about 5 o'clock on the obverse. it appears that at some later time, a punch was then used th stamp initials over that. But I cant really make out wha tthey say. This is an 1876 S. A buyer asked me if I knew what they said and I suddenly became awaere of my ignorance. Now my curiosity is going.
Would love to know if this has been encountered before, what the stamps mean, and how muchtime mayhave elapsed between the stamps.
I have seen chop marks, holed, and holed then filled Trade Dollars but not this type of mark. I admit I have not seen that many Trade dollars but I am now curious.
TIA for any answers!
Paul

Post a picture (or several). I'll give it a shot.

They might have been talking about this, but they sold it the day of the post.
