Circular marks on dimes

Does anyone know what operation or devise caused the round impression I see occasionally on US dimes? They are alway perfectly centered usually on the obverse side, and can range from a partial hit to almost a complete circle. I have seen them on the Barber series through maybe the late teens on Mercury's. m98 o.JPG

Circular marks on dimes

30 June 2017 -  In addition, many coins that were used in 'one arm bandits' have circular marks on them.  Added post minting.   Heron saw many of these during his visits to the City of Lost Wages Nevada.  In 1960 - 1963.
