Built Model Airplane Collection

I have an opportunity to buy a collection of approximately 500 built model airplanes of mostly WWI and WWII made between the 1960's - through 2000's. Unfortunately I do not know the scale but they are no longer than 12" probably closer to 8".  Are collectors interested in already built models? I am not sure if this is something I should even consider. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

@industrialfunk,

Pre-built model planes do not have much value, unless they are very well built and painted.  They are a  pain to ship because of small parts that can fall or break off during shipping.  As for trying to figure out their scale, you would have to know what type of plane you have.

  To find the Scale of your Model: Take the length of the Full Size plane in Feet, multiply (x) by 12 to get the Length in Inches. Take that number and Divide it by the Length of your model (also in Inches), and you will have determined the Scale.

Some people find it easier to work with centimeters using a metric conversion calculator  to convert inches to centimeters and back again.

The problem you may run into is knowing the type of plane you want to know the scale of.  Some planes are very recognizable like a P-51 Mustang.  You can look that up online and get the length or wingspan. to do the above calculation.  Given your estimated model lengths your models are probably 1/72 scale.

Built Model Airplane Collection

Hello,

I have a lot of experience in the model airplane space. Selling prebuild models is best as a lot. A lot of builders stay within the same scale and it sounds like the collection is going to be about 1/72 Scale. Again its going to be best to sell them as a lot. Like the other comment stated they are very hard to ship being the size and how fragile they can be. Also buyers are going to be using them as props for other projects or parts for builds they are currently working on.  Its a good idea to get them if they are at a very low price point or free. Be patient with the sales and understand its a very small community of people going to be looking to buy them.

Good Luck,
