I don't remember if I told you all of how she came to be called Ma Bill, if I did just ignore this. Nobody knows why but her husband's (who died before I was born) nick name for her was Bill. She said he would come in from work and kiss her on the cheek and say "Love you Bill." When my Mom was born she called her Grandma Bill and when I was born I called her Mama Bill.

My sister came along and could just say Ma Bill and that's how she got the name. Her actual name was Emma with no middle name. This is getting long and I'll wait until another time to tell you why she had no middle name.

Carole, remember you asked for it. I just thought it might be too long and boring.

MaBill came from a family of 5. Three older brothers and one younger. The family did not want girls, only boys to work. When she was 2 years she had no name, they just called her girl. A young lady down the road used to walk by and smile and talk to her. The lady's name was Elizabeth. MaBill loved the name and at 2 years old tried to tell her Mother she wanted her name to be Elizabeth.

At that age she still couldn't talk very well, probaly because nobody talked to her or paid any attention to her.  Whe she tried to say Elizabeth her Mother didn't pay attention and figured she was saying Emma, so from that day on she was only Emma.

If you want to hear any more of the story of her childhood just ask, I don't want to bore you.

Carole, Prayers for your unspoken request. Please also pray for my unspoken request.

When MaBill was five years old, that was in 1878, since she couldn't do the boys work she had to help her Mother with everything around the house. You remember I told you that her parents never wanted her. She was helping her Mother do the laundry. This was in a huge cast iron pot that sat outside on an open fire. When the fire didn't keep the water hot enough they had gallon jugs of water boiling on the wood stove inside. It was MaBills jobe at five years old to carry the boiling water from the house to the pot outside.

I'm sure she was very small for her age as she was a tiny adult. When she was carrying one of the gallons of boiling water she fell and the boiling water went all over her legs, burning her badly. He Mother yelled at her and was coming to whip her for spilling the water and she got up and ran to the barn. She layed in the barn the rest of the day and nobody checked on her. Her legs were blistered from the feet to the hips, I'm sure it was agonizing pain especially for a small child.

When he older brothers came in from the field somehow they learned what had happened to her. Each one of them sneaked food from their plate and took it to the  barn for her. One of her brothers brought her some type of cream that was supposed to be for burns. She stayed in the barn all night in the hay crying. The next day when she limped out of the barn and saw her Mother, her Mother whipped her with a belt.

There is a little more to her childhood and it has a somewhat happy ending. I will tell more tomorrow.

Prayer Request Thread

Carole, thank you for the prayers!

Needless to say MaBill's childhood was terrible. There are many more things that happened that I don't know. MaBill NEVER talked about her childhood, my Mother was told these things by MaBill's husband. MaBill would have never talked badly about her Mother or Father. Her Father was an alcoholic and as mean as they come and her Mother was not an alcoholic but very mean.

Her childhood would have been even worse had it not been for her brothers. They tried as much as they could to protect her. Even taking punishment for something she had done which really didn't deserve punishment in the first place. Her brothers knew their punishment would be very little and hers would be a beating.

How ironic, her Mother became very sick after MaBill was married. She was bed ridden for over five years and guess who took  care of her waiting on her hand and foor for all those years until she died.

MaBill became pregnant with her first two years after she married. She had twin girls that died at birth. Back in those days it was almost impossible to keep premature babies from dying. That is so sad to me because I know she would have been a wonderful Mother. She went on to have a son and he was her only child

She and her husband moved from Illinois to Missouri shortly after they married. He built her a huge two story home that still stands as beautiful as ever. The building right next door was their General Store. I am so happy a Praise God she had a very loving husband who put her on a pedestal. He passed away before I was born but my Mother told me how great he was. MaBill also took care of him for several years as he became bed ridden with Tuberculosis.

Less than a year after her husbands death her son, my Mothers Father, died from Pneumonia. She was seventy one years old when I was born and raised me to a teenager. We lived, just she and I, all alone in the big house her husband built and we loved it!

Just a funny little thing I remember. There were several of her friends at her house one day and one of them had made some Hard Cider. Everybody tasted it, except me of course, but MaBill refused to even taste it. I asked her why and she told me when she was about 10 years old she got sick. I don't remember what the illness was but her alcoholic Father said whe needed a Hot Toddy, Whiskey and Lemon Juice. She drank it and liked it and later that night she would sneak down and get some more. She was so afraid she would become an alcoholic like her Father she never in her life would even take a sip of any kind of alcohol.

I'll wind this up tomorrow! I can't believe I have rambled on so much!

Prayer Request Thread

Hello all!

I forgot to tell you yesterday, when MaBill's husband built her the beautiful big home, it was finished in 1901. It had a very modern water cistern where the water came into the house through faucets just like ours. Can you believe it had 1 1/2 bathrooms with toilets and faucets that really worked. The 1/2 bath was downstairs so guests could wash up before going into the huge, and I do mean huge formal dining room! After he died MaBill couldn't keep up with the entire cistern system so when I lived there we had ourdoor plumbing! I have an old glass negative of MaBill standing in front of the house the day it was finished.

I wasn't a perfect child and MaBill's punishment was to sit in a chair for an hour. We had no TV and I had to sit there with no toy, no book or anything. You can imagine how long an hour is to a child with nothing to do! She spanked me one time in my whole life! She had no car, had never driven in her life so it was great we lived in a town with a population at that time was 411. We had 2 grocery stores 2 gas stations, a drug store and a post office. I think we had all that because in those days a major hi way ran right through the middle of town.

But I digress, speaking of the one spanking I got, sure was a shock to me! There were also 2 churches. One was a block and a half from the house and that's is the one we attended. The Pastor's daughter and I were the same age and we always sat together in church. One Sunday morning MaBill had sat a couple of pews behind my friend and I. When we were walking home MaBill told me I was going to get a spanking when we got home. I was stunned and asked why?

MaBill told me that my friend and I had acted up, giggling and such all through the sermon. We got home and she got a switch off of her Hazel Nut bush and might have switched my legs about 4 times. It stung a bit but the idea of her spanking me caused me to cry for hours. You couldn't even see a mark on my legs, that's how hard she hit me. That was the one thing you NEVER do, act up in church!

There's a little bit more to the never ending saga! LOL!! I'll do it tomorrow.

GOD BLESS YOU ALL!
