Anyone know what this Georgian English sterling piece was used for?

I have no idea the use of this piece and have never seen one in all my years. Measures approx 15" long and was made in 1799 in London. Would appreciate any info. I'm going to go out on a limb here - looks like something you would put a piece of bread into and then hold over / near a flame to 'toast' it.

But made of sterling? It will scorch in teh fireplace!  What a crime to do that to good silver!
