Why can't I select media mail when purchasing a label when I am selling a book?

Because when you listed the book for sale, you didn't list it in the book category. You probably listed it in the category of the topic of the book. That is eBay's way to prevent misuse of the USPS media rate. It happened to me too, I didn't like it either. You can still take the book to the post office and mail it media rate there. The cost is the same at the post office or eBay for the media rate.

Check the category you are listing in. Most likely in a category that does not qualify for media mail.

In an effort to reduce the abuse of Media Mail for ineligible items, eBay has chosen to block the purchase of MM labels for items that sale in categories where all or most items aren't eligible.

 Your recent book sale (Mary Stone Winter's Rise) was listed in the Magazines subcategory.  Magazines aren't eligible for Media Mail shipping, so eBay is not  making MM shipping label available for this item.  Your book is eligible, so you can ship it via MM by purchasing the label elsewhere online (PayPal. etc) or at the local Post Office.
