how does shipping work?

I'm a new(ish) seller to ebay, and have sold a couple things now. one thing that always confuses me though, is that when I sell something, I only get the money for the item, and not the shipping money to purchase the label with (on mercari, you just get an email with the shipping label). is this normal? I set the shipping preferences to "buyer pays for shipping (calculated)", but I'm not seeing the money I should be getting for shipping.

The shipping is included with the funds deposited in your Pay Pal account.

It's just one combined payment.

my only problem with that is that I didn't get the full amount. I got the amount for the item iteself, but it didn't include the shipping cost.
here's my most recent example. I just sold something for 13 bucks. It also has 4.80 shipping. but I only got the 13 dollars added to my account.

Is it possible you've read the numbers incorrectly? You should have received about $17 in your PayPal account; if the buyer paid sales tax, you may have received a bit less, but not less than $16.50.

Can you provide some info:

What is the item #?

What is the exact amount that was deposited in your PayPal account?

Your most recent sale was on Feb 1, 2021 for $1.25 with $2.89 for shipping.  So you should have received $1.25 + $2.89 + sales tax.  Paypal charges 2.9% of that amount + .30 transaction fee, and you get the rest.

nope. I checked my selling overview, and it says I have 14.25; 13 from my most recent sale, and 1.25 from another. this happened last time, too. in the end, the buyer sent me shipping through paypal, and I bought a shipping label that way.

I don't want to use my profits to pay for shipping labels (which is why I'm opting for the buyer to pay shipping), but so far this problem has happened every time I made a sale.
