So I bought a video game. The disc looks like it's in decent condition at first look, really. The game loads up and plays, but at a certain point (within 30 minutes or less) the game inevitably crashes.
-I tried gently cleaning it with a microfiber cloth
-I tried putting a different game in to make sure it's not the system. It isn't the system.
-I tried messing with certain options in the game (turning off certain animations) but that didn't help
-And I tried deleting the save and starting over. But nothing seems to work
The description said nothing other than "Condition is 'Very Good'" with some images of a disc that doesn't look too bad. The seller does not accept returns. Is this grounds for a refund, and if so, should I contact the seller? What steps do I take here?

you can return the disk.file an item not as described and choose broken or not working
thats the truth..................you are entiled to round trip free shipping on it
there is no need to contact the buyer...........if they offer credit or a partial you can work things out .
I woud go straight to the return button

If it is sold as working, yes you can. Some discs can suffer "bit rot", discs look fine but become unusable over time; it is rare, but happens, Sega Saturn games have a major issue with it. LaserDiscs have this problem as well.
Depending on the game system the disc is for, you can put it in a PC DVD drive and run tools to see if the disc is readable or not.
Assuming discs work by appearance is risky. Especially if they are for a system known for bit rot, or have any wear.
