I'm reading in the Media that President Biden has ordered most Guvmnt offices and services
closed for President Carter's funeral Thursday the 9th.
I don't see any notice on the USPS website, as yet.
Any word? speculation? conjecture?

The National Day of Observance for Former President Jimmy Carter on Thursday, January 9 is a public holiday andd is not considered a working day for shipping and will not be included in estimated delivery date calculations. USPS hasalso announced that the Postal Service will suspend regular mail deliveries, retail services and administrative office activity on Thursday, January 9.

Absolutely absurd.

Why do you think it's absurd? Jimmy Carter was a decent and kind person who did fantastic work after the White House. I think it's ok from time to time to honor such people.

I'm sure you felt the same way when Ronald Reagan and George Bush passed away.

You will probably have to wait until that day to find out. The USPS said the post office was open on New Years Eve and it WAS NOT! So don't believe their website.

And mine closed at noon (normally open until 5:30).
Maybe it is an individual choice of each office?

Richard, I think you nailed it. My PO was open till 5:30 like always.

It is a normal thing for a President to do when a previous President has died.
According to the New York Times, "it is common for presidents to mark the deaths of their predecessors with such proclamations," but national days of mourning don't just apply to former presidents: President Lyndon Johnson declared one for the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and President George W. Bush designated one for the victims of the September 11 terror attacks.

I'm sure there are others as well.

Some former presidents are worthy of a holiday and some are not......Jimmy is definitely worthy.....another that I won't mention would not be (in my opinion) but if the then current President decides to give them one....well that is their prerogative.

Mine closed at 12 New Year's Eve.
They had the holiday hours posted on the door the day after Thanksgiving.
And repeated, in special section, the 1/2 day on Christmas Eve and the 1/2 day on New Year's Eve.

Yeah, so was mine (except until 6 rather than 5:30, because those are its regular hours).

In what way? Please be specific.

They know that stating such a thing is absolutely absurd.
