USPS Shipping Status Forwarded

I just sold my first item, it was being shipped internationally. I printed the priority mail international label from ebay and dropped it off at the post office. I woke up this morning and decided to track it to make sure it was on it's way to my buyer. The tracking on ebay showed it had arrived at a USPS facility about 30 minutes from the post office i dropped it off at. There was another update that gave a status of misship. I figured it got sent to the wrong facility and was being re-routed to the correct location. 

I just re-checked and this misshipped information has disapeared and has been replaced by a status of forwarded.

I called my post office and the 1800 number and both gave me different answers. The 1800 number told me it was being returned (could take up to 5 days) to me because i hadn't included the buyers zip code. The post office told me it could either be returned to me due to a zip code issue or my postage was incorrect or be sent to the buyer on it's own because it was sent to the wrong facility and to wait until next Friday. Does anyone have any idea what i should do in this case, since I printed the label of ebay, i know the zipcode is on there. I typed the buyers shipping info on to google and it shows up as correct  It's my first sale and I'm just a bit concerned about the fact that every postal worker i've spoken to has given me a different answer.

Something sounds goofy.   I wouldn't think that they would even look at the zip code of another country and an item wouldn't be forwarded unless  it reached the address it was going to and they requested forwarding. Obviously that isn't the case if the item hasn't left the US yet. 

Which country is this going to?  Does this system work in other countries?

International destinations do not have zip codes -- they may have postal codes. Did you make sure to include the COUNTRY name and possibly the PROVINCE name on the label?  Did you include a properly filled out Customs form?

Keep in mind that some countries (notably Germany in my experience) have 5-digit postal codes that sometimes are exactly the same as for a U.S. city.  Even with a Customs paperwork attached, USPS personnel don't pay attention and try to process a package as domestic!

It's being sent to New Zealand. 

I stopped by the post office where I dropped it off and they confirmed the address as being correct. The person showed me a line in there tracking info which showed missent at 8:38 am followed by forwarding at 8:39 am, but were really confused about the forwarding status. 

I included the postal code and country name. The customs form was printed of ebay and I double checked it.
