USPS Damage Claims

An item that I sold on Ebay was damaged during shipping. I filled out a claim form on the USPS website, but it didn't give me much information. This is the first time I've filed a claim in years, and the first time I've done it online. Can someone please give me an idea of how long the claim takes and whether I will get a refund for my shipping costs? Also, do I refund the buyer immediately? And do they have to hold onto the item and packaging for a certain amount of time? So many questions...

Thanks in advance!

yes you should refund the buyer immediately and no, you wont get your shipping fee back. The buyer should hang onto the item and packaging in case the postal inspector wants to see it. Ive only filed one damage report with USPS, and the refund took about three weeks. They didnt ask to see the packaging or item in my case.

How much have you spent on insurance in the past few years?
