Hi all.
I sold a projector lens for $1790 and it arrived badly damaged from UPS. I purchased insurance when buying the label through eBay. I'm now awaiting the return of said lens.
I was dropping something off at the local UPS Store today asked if they could help with the claim once I get it back. They told me that only the purchaser of the label (eBay) can file the claim. Hmm, okay...
I'm waiting till I get the lens back before I file the claim, but I wanted to check out eBay's process. It took me straight to UPS's website???
Is my guy at The UPS Store wrong?
What's the best way to proceed?
Thanks!

Did you purchase ShipCover insurance? If so, you can file your insurance claim directly through Ebay.
Go to My Ebay -> Orders -> Shipping Labels
Find the order, and click Actions, and then Create Claim.

I'm only 90% sure I purchased additional coverage when buying the label. If not, I'm an idiot, but it is possible.
How do I see if I bought extra insurance on eBay. I've tried everything...

@dexterb-41 if you didn't then your only getting back $100
if you used ups you can open the claim on the ups website
you will use all of the same information you used thru ebay
IF they at some point ask about the shipper account, which is possible you simply state you shipped thru ebay labels and that all of your information is correct as entered and they can still proceed from there, if not then ask for a supervisor, they technically do not need it from you they can see it on there end.
UPS is the WORST for filing claims they will drag there feet and ask for more information, if you do not hear from them at any point for a few business days, then go log back in and look at the claims status and either reply as needed or call them, if they deny the claim (which is likely due to the value) then appeal it and be pushy. as long the padding was 2" or more on all sides and the shipping box was rated at or above the weight of the lens then you are good. actually if was under 50lbs the box rating shouldn't matter.

Hi @dexterb-41 . The guy at the UPS store was wrong. There is a very specific process for filing a UPS claim on an item purchased with eBay labels. You file on UPS and need to have the same email on your UPS account as your eBay account.

On eBay UPS insurance caps at $999 so that's the max you could have purchased buying the coverage through eBay. No idea why people are talking about ShipCover upthread as that's only available on USPS labels through eBay, not UPS or FedEx.

Thanks babyers88! You've been a big help here and in my other thread.

Thanks everybody! I received the damaged item from the buyer today.
I'm going to start the claim process now. I'm sure I bought insurance now that I see the buyer paid $19.99 shipping and I paid $33.85. I'll take the $999 if they'll give it...
Will UPS ask for the item? Or will I get to keep it and potentially repair it?

Okay, I'm trying to file this claim and UPS is asking for the receiver's phone number and it's a required field. Why would they expect that I'd have that info? I suppose they're putting up roadblocks on purpose?
I called UPS to find out, but they wanted the tracking number - which I didn't have in front of me. I'll try again tomorrow...
Do you think I would be okay to make up a number?

buyer's phone # should be in the "order details" for a while (seems at least 2 weeks or so) after the sale.

I got it!
Thanks.

you can file the claim and provide pictures of the damage and the associated damage on the box
take photos of the outside of the box and the lens inside the box with the packing material
be sure to show any crushed part of the box or any puncture holes or tears. Also the damage on the lens.
In almost any case they are not going to need or request you hand over the lens.
you can do it all online.
provide a copy of the ebay sales receipt either as a photo or a pdf, your photos of the box and lens damage
then provide a written statement somewhere along the lines of "the lens was packaged very carefully with more than 2" of protection on all sides, this item should never have been damaged if it was handled properly, please do better!"
the rest is just providing any other data, like make/type/etc
once you have submitted everything, then you just have to wait it's not a overnight process if you do not get any updates after 7-10 days, then call them and provide the claim number and ask what is the status of the claim. If they say they are denying the claim inquire why and question it (be courteous and calm, don't start cussing and screaming that is not going to help), if need be ask for a claims supervisor, don't take no for an answer, the more you squeak the more they are going to bend if the denial was something they pulled out of thin air, if it is not automatically approved then they may still pay out and say something to the effect of a "one time courtesy" which is fine but it's **bleep**
As long as your not a person filling claims all the time then they start looking harder at everything.
**as a fail safe though retain the lens and packaging (as-is) until you get paid out, then you can proceed as desired

OP once again!
I know some of you haven't slept since my last post, but I have good news! 😆
Two days ago, UPS asked for Proof of Value. I sent them a receipt from eBay and wrote them a Word document to explain how the hole in the box exactly matched the damage to the lens.
Tonight they sent an email saying the claim has been approved and I'm getting $999.00 PLUS the original shipping costs! I never really thought that would happen.
Thanks to all of you!
BTW, they didn't say how I'd get paid. I assume a check in the mail?

....the $999 will come to you as shipping credit....you get $999 worth of free UPS shipping 🙂 Nah, I have no idea how they credit you, either...but glad they approved it

You had me going for a second... 😛
Thanks!
