I received an email today saying my item had been delivered. When I got home from work the package clearly was not there. I contacted the seller and he said he gave me the wrong tracking number. And that the number he gave me was for someone else's package. What I cannot figure out is that the tracking history shows scans all the way to my address. Shouldn't there be someone else's package on my porch in that case? The seller said he will provide me with a new tracking number tomorrow. Is this legit?

There is a chance it is an honest mistake, and hopefully it is just an honest mistake.  But it really depends on the reputation of the seller and the value of the item you purchased.  You'll need to wait until the expected delivery date in order to know one way or another.  If it arrives, great!  If not ... well ...

.... if the package shows delivered to the same zip code as your location, then you are describing a common scam on eBay that eBay is well aware of but hasn't fixed.  The scammer knows that eBay can only see the delivery zip code and delivery status, and the seller sends a lightweight empty package to a random address in your zip code ... if you try to claim "Item Not Received", then eBay will look at the information and rule against you.  To beat the thief, it takes savy and a little legwork to get your money back:

If that is the case, here is what you would need to do:

  1. File and Item Not Received claim ... as part of the claim do two things:  (a) detail that the seller is doing the "same zip code" scam, and (b) supply verification that USPS did not deliver to your specific address.  Typically, eBay requires you to do the legwork and get some sort of document from the postmaster at your local USPS branch on USPS letterhead that states that the item was delivered to an address other than your address (the USPS cannot tell you the delivery address, but can tell you that it isn't XYZ address).  This establishes to eBay that the delivery address does not match, and this evidence will get you a refund.
  2. The above should work, and hopefully eBay will make it an easy process for you ... if it doesn't, you can ultimately appeal to your credit/debit card company for fraud.

You won't be getting another tracking number, @jeremiadent0; your seller already has proof of delivery. If you feel like pursuing this -- it's arduous, ask the carrier for an official document showing where that tracking number was delivered, then contact eBay.

I have a package that says delivered, Here is the story,,,,,,

 usps tracking said my package left North Houston, Arrived at my Santa fe Texas Post office, was out for delivery and delivered at 506 pm. NO PACKAGE... Called the post office, They said it was never at their office and never on the truck and never delivered by them to me...... I was told the tracking info was  auto generated. They are looking into it... If this is true and the tracking number just auto generated from North Houston , To my post office and out for delivery and delivered, We have a lot more Problems ahead. I cant file a INR because the tracking number says it was delivered, Not My sellers fault, Not my fault, I am just out a package.??.. Its was only a under 5 dollar item, But NEXT time it may be more. How on earth do we get repaid for an item we bought  even though it says delivered through Usps.. AND can Usps really auto generate fake tracking all the way  from my post office to my door?

@Anonymous

When you file an Item Not Received claim, eBay looks at (a) the delivery status and (b) the delivery zip code.  If the item says "delivered" and the zip code matches to your home, then you lose the INR claim ... otherwise, you will get refunded.

Thank you. I already called UPS and they verified to me that the package did go to a different address. So I have that information to fall back on in case it's a scam. Thank you for your help.

I've had this problem several times, in each instance the Post Office was able to give me the address where the packages were delivered. They told me those scanners the Postal person uses record the GPS location when they scan the package, which may or may not be at your house, they may scan a number of items ahead of time. The last time was for three Ipods, $150, that were scanned three houses away from my buyer.

The buyer was not able to get his Ipods back but Ebay gave him $150 and charged me nothing.
