First off I know why they did it, with AI today, they can find a way to see the items that are overcharging on shipping.
They are not involved in any process of the shipping.
But anyway, my question is what is the shipping fee in terms of percentage?
I looked, but cannot find it.
I had to look at the last item I sold. It was $3.75 to ship it, and was charged 38 cents. So it came out to 10%.
But it cost me like $4 and change to ship it. Don't eBay realize that not everyone has a printer?
Being that I have to go to USPS office to ship and pay for it, how much % does ebay give you off of printing a label? I will then also have to add that onto the cost of my items.
Like it it cost me $8.00 to ship something, and if I print if through PayPal getting a 25% discount. That would be $6. But being that I am paying at the counter, I am paying $8.
Maybe it would be better if I just add the 10% onto the item them.
I was thinking of offering free shipping, and just add 10% to the final cost of the product.

eBay does not care if you have a printer or not. They don't care about you at all. All they care about is generating short term profits so eBay management meets it internal goals so eBay management get their bonuses.
Rule No. 1 is do not believe anything eBay or PayPal says!
This is after all the same company that produced the infamous video about how to use calculated shipping.
For long term sellers here that video is a tragic comedy as its chunk full of so many hilarious slapstick gags.
I am still laughing at point in the video where they tell you to prepackage your item in order to know what its going to weigh. Thats funny!
Buy yourself a monotone laser printer. Buy a printer with a separate drum and toner cartridge so you don't need to change the drum each time you change the toner cartridge. Buy a high capacity toner cartridge as that will print many thousands of labels. Print your labels on plain laser / copier paper, two to a page. Use standard 2" clear packaging tape to adhere the labels to boxes. Apply the tape evenly over the labels - wrinkles in the tape can interfere with some scanning equipment, especially the older equipment. Make sure your labels are crisp as blurry labels can interfere with scanning equipment. Laser printers use heat to fuse the toner to the page and are faster than inkjets. Inkjet labels may run if they get wet. Instead of paying $30 for a inkjet cartridge that can easily get clogged and runs out quickly you could buy a large capacity toner cartridge that will print 20,000 eBay labels.
Free shipping is going to raise prices for buyers. Its a marketing ploy by eBay to raises prices so they make more money! Remember rule #1 from above!
Logically think about what free shipping involves instead of jumping on eBay's bandwagon.
You are going to have to add the cost of zone 9 shipping to the cost of the item. You are forcing all buyers to pay zone 9 shipping regardless of where they live. Does that make sense? But eBay and PayPal charge you a fee on that shipping so you just can't add eBay's commercial rate to the price of the item unless you want to loose money on the item. You need to add the commercial rate plus an additional amount to cover those fees. The easiest way to do that is change your eBay preferences to charge customers the retail rate while you pay the commercial rate. The difference between the two should cover these fees in most cases. The difference might not cover these fees for some smaller items so add additional amount to the item price (i.e., $1.00, $2.00, etc..).
When USPS updates its rates you will need to edit every single one of your unsold items if you use free shipping. The scenario above in conjunction with calculated shipping saves you from editing your unsold listings as eBay will update the retail and commercial rates automatically.

As a general rule 10% is a good overall guide; however, some categories have a 12% fee.

Since you are new eBay, eBay is giving you commercial rates with $50 insurance. You can import your orders at Pirateship and get commercial rates with $100 insurance and cubic pricing for small Priority Mail items of 1/2 square foot or less. After you become Top Rated switch to eBay labels for commercial rates less a 3% discount and $100 insurance. Pirateship's cubic rate may still be cheaper for some small items.
Use GarageSale to manage your listing if you have a Macintosh. It runs circles around eBay's own dinosaur tools.

Two inkjet cartridges (1 tri color 1 black HP 65) for a HP Deskjet 3755 are only $27.00 at Office Depot and can be had for $14 on eBay. The printer comes with two set up cartridges (1 color & 1black) - I'm still using them for printing- have done several multi-page printings (10 or more) each.
Plus we use the printer for many other things than eBay labels - they are really handy to have around.
You will be wasting more money on lost discounts & gas to drive to the PO and then stand in line to get your labels at the counter with people hacking & coughing - yep I avoid walking near the Pharmacy wait line at WalMart.
Of course, you can do it your way.

The PO is a 5 minute walk from my house. Staples, which also have a fedex, ups, and usps shipping center, is about a 20 minute walk from my house.

Printers are not cheap, when you factor in the cost of ink.
I sell less then $50 a month only.
I bought a for $30. It came with ink. That lasted me about 3 months. Rather than replace the ink, I sold the printer on CL for $30 and bought a new printer, with ink.

i hear you, ex-wife wanted a printer around christmas a few years ago so i bought her 3 of walmarts disposable printers for $28 ea. (full set of color and black cost $42). she asked me why and i told her 'cuz they was disposables!' 😄
however, i feel the best printers for here on ebay are the thermal label printers. they cost me about $0.02 cents per label if i remember right. and quickly paid for themselves. both the zebra 2844 and the brother ql-570 (per label cost is about the same for both).

Followed in my opinion by a small laser jet printer. You're not going to print color from one, but it can sit for months without being used with no danger of the ink drying out on you, and you can nurse the toner cartridge along for quite a long time by just shaking the cartridge. An inkjet printer - once it's decided the cartridge is empty, that's it. It's not going to print any more images until you replace that cartridge.

Thermal printers are too expensive. Laser printers are like half price.
Maybe if you're a high volume seller it's a good investment.

yes they are a bit more for the printer themselves.
pro's to thermals:
-dependable
-long lasting
-next to no maintenance
-compact and easily movable
-labels are cheaper overall than letter size half sheet labels
-no ink or toner cartridges to purchase and repurchase
-there are a few others also...
con's to thermals:
-limited in types of printable medium
(i would come up with more but i am brain dead right now after going thru 700 listings to set for the 23JUN USPS DIM/WEIGHT occurance to try not to lose money on future shipping. luck to everyone regarding that!)

What brand of thermal printer do you recommend?
06-25-2019 01:13 PM
When you purchase something that shows the S&H and are then charged the same amount shown, there is no overcharging for shipping.

i've had no problems with the brother ql-570. however you can't print fedex labels on it only usps).
i have a zebra LP2844 that works great, but again i haven't gotten it to print fedex yet).
i read of others that use the zebra 450 and have no problems at all printing fedex or usps.
then some talk about other 4x6 thermal label printers also. you should start a thread in the shipping and returns section for thermal printer recommendations and reason as well as the site and shipping services being used. you should get lots of good info then... (me'z not really an xpert and mostly only use usps.) 😮
