Ship from a different zip code.

On occasion, for a variety of reasons, I drop off a shipment from a different Post Office other than my home.  I found out from a very angry postal worker that the Post Office somehow gets credit for items shipped.  Even when shipping from the same city, they expect the zip code on the label to match the Post Office handling the package.

I used to be able to switch the ship from zip code (Post Office) before printing the label.  I tried to change the ship from Post Office this AM, and it appears the only way to do that is to go into preferences and change my default ship from address.  I'd have to then go back and change it back to my home address every time I do it.

Is there another way that I'm missing?

My "shipped from" address and ZIP are in Washington state, but I do 95% of my shipping from Illinois (where I go to school). No real problems or issues so far.  And the people at the post office don't seem to mind.

That's an interesting one. Not wanting return address in IL because if you sell in May and the item is returned like 29 days later before the MBG runs out, the return would be sent to IL and you may be home in WA for summer break. I've pondered that issue before.

I'm surprised you've had no issues yet with this. I feel like you might run into some issues soon. Who knows though.

I think your ship from zip code and return address can be different as others have suggested, or I think they have. IDK. Interesting conundrum

I'm thinking now that is probably best I change the ship from address while I'm at school...I'm here for extended periods, so it's not like I would have to make the change on a regular basis. As @nobody*s_perfect pointed out, a package deemed undeliverable would be a huge headache for me. Thanks!!!

Just remember, ship an item from school, go on summer break, return is filed (within 30 days of sale) and you may have the headache if the item is attempted to be returned to your school IL address as opposed to your home WA address. I support the ship from address being IL school address, because you're in IL more time out of the year than in WA, but there are those trade-offs for sure! Ideally, you choose the lesser headache, (lesser of two evils :P)

I'm glad I wasn't selling online when I was in school, although I only went to school in Kenosha, WI (across border) and am from Chicago suburbs, so wasn't that far. But when I had mail like credit card bills etc I sent them home so I wouldn't have to deal with the headache of switching address for important mail and getting stuff I need sent to the wrong places. At least at home I knew they were secure and my mom could tell me what I owed and i could write the check out from school.

Yes, that's the whole reason for having a separate entry for a "Ships from" ZIP Code.

They'll just have to decide on a cutoff date towards the end of the school year, when they switch their return address from IL to WA.  Changing the return address on your shipping label usually carries over to future labels, so it's very easy to do it once to switch to WA  in the spring and then switch back to IL in the fall.

It’s not about getting it delivered. Ignoring the postal clerk, then could cause that post office that is convenient to drop things off. Get shortened hours are closed. By changing the zip code you are dropping it off to gives that office credit which gives those clerks their clerk hours for handling the prepaid mail that is coming in. So if an office is convenient to drop it off at you want to keep it there for your convenience and give the clerks the credit and hours for handling your mail. That’s why it matters to have the correct zip code of the office you are mailing it from. The post office is non profit and runs of if what it makes so the mailed from zip code shows your using that office and gives that office the revenue. That office runs off the revenue coming in. So why wouldn’t you want to help the office that is convenient for you to mail from?

Baloney

I ship my packages from a different post office 2 towns over. They never tell me any of that. It matters not what post office you use.
The post office that handles my zip code has incompetent people working there. Scheduled pick ups are never picked up, packages are never scanned. So I would rather drive out of my way to get good service then to get poor service.

You are incorrect yes, we may have to scan them in, but when it said that it sent from a certain post office, the ZIP Code that reflects that gets the revenue for the mailing so when you change the ZIP Code to the office or actually taking it to  we do get credit for it because we get to collect the revenue, and since we’re nonprofit, we work off of what we make, and that revenue is what helps pay for a clerk hours. So when the ZIP Code is changed to the office, you take it to than the revenue, gives the clerks credit to be able to be scheduled more hours… or what we called earned hours “earned off the revenue we make.

That is incorrect that we get paid by the hour and not the package. The revenue that comes into the post office is what gives us earned clerk hours so how much revenue that comes into an office calculates how many hours that they can schedule their clerks. The post office is non profit and runs on what it makes so individual office budgets are always changing depending the revenue coming in.
