I just wanted to share my latest experience on Ebay.
I recently purchased an acoustic guitar for my daughter. $135 plus $80 to ship.
It was a vintage Epiphone with soft shell case.
I met the mail man and woman at the end of my driveway to receive the guitar
myself. When they handed me the box it looked as if the box had been used for batting practice. The mail person told me they scanned it as damaged and said,
"It wasn't packaged very good". I took it in the house and took pictures of the box. I opened the guitar case and found the bridge had lifted from the body. When I took it out of the case I saw that the guitar had been completely smashed beyond use or repair.
I contacted seller and they said it wasn't damaged when it was shipped and to send pictures to show the damage. I sent the pictures. The seller said they would file a claim with USPS. The seller told me if the post office would not accept the claim they would refund my money. The next day the seller emailed me a request for phone number and email for USPS claim. Two days later I received an email from seller offering a partial refund. $135.00 minus the shipping. I did not accept the partial refund. I checked with USPS and a claim was filed.
I'll wait for resolution but in the mean time enjoy the the pictures of not how to package a guitar.this is how it arrived

Go to the Resolution Center now, and open a case for ITEM NOT AS DESCRIBED. Seller owes you a full refund now. You do not have to wait for the seller's insurance claim to be paid. That is the seller's problem.
If the seller wants you to send back the broken guitar, he/she must pay for the return shipping label.

(Resolution Center is an older software interface ... I believe someone, recently, said that some parts of it are no longer working ... not sure).
These are the (more modern) steps to take:
Then follow instructions. You should be fully refunded in a couple of days ... if not, escalate the claim when it allows you. Do not accept a partial refund because the Money Back Guarantee will refund total cost of item plush shipping paid. Also, you may be asked to hold onto the item (rather than shipping back), or turn it over to the USPS for the insurance claim.

So I had Ebay escalate the process and they sent me a return label.
The USPS denied the sellers claim which I suppose is the reason the
seller offered a partial refund. I wasn't able to use the same shipping box
so I fabricated my own and made a splint. The guitar arrived back to the
seller yesterday but I haven't heard from Ebay or the seller yet but it's the
weekend.
Upon further investigation, I am convinced the guitar was separated prior
to shipping. Mainly because after seeing the damage upon arrival and seeing
the separation in person, you can clearly see the separation in the listing photo.
I know this is a hard lesson to learn but if only the guitar had been packaged
worthy of a musical instrument we wouldn't be having this conversation. Also in the sellers defense there is evidence of a bucket that was placed on the guitar during shipping. You can see the pressure ring from the bucket inside the case, but I don't think there was enough cushion to protect it.
More to follow.
the separation is at 4 o'clock
peanuts only on one side of box
ring where bucket crushed guitar
splint I made from scraps for case
guitar ready to ship

Does your tracking progress Accepted > In Transit > Delivered on your returns page show delivered already?
eBay forces a refund minutes after tracking shows delivered. (Those who don't understand how eBay works are about to respond that the seller has 2 business days to refund.)

We have been selling on eBay for going on three years now and the USPS has taken its toll on multiple items (including packages with forklift tracks across them). We ended up refunding these despite it not being our fault and now whenever I higher end item sales ALWAYS use FedEx.
