I have been selling a few items recently, usually more of a buyer. When I put the package dimensions, weight, etc in and produce an invoice I get one amount, in this case $1.60. The buyer pays that, then when I went in and printed exactly that label, first class package, it charges me $3.01. Seeing as the item sold for $1, I just lost money, plus packaging and time. This is at least the second time this happened. The last time, it was more money, heavier item.

Make sure you have your listings set up for first class package (sounds like you have them set up for envelope.)

I think OP have it correct. When you use eBay's shipping calculator when you set up the listing, you MAY be shipping in a Large Envelop and so that is what you select. That is a First Class Mail (flats) rate that is shown. FCM has no tracking.
When you go to buy the label, eBay does not show you the FC mail stuff because they don't sell it. So the postage defaults to a First Class Package service. FCP has tracking and thus is more expensive.
You are under no obligation to ship with tracking so you could use stamps and ship for 1.60. That said you will have no tracking to "prove" delivery and if a buyer claim "not received" you will lose the case and have to refund the buyer.
So when you set up the listing, select "package" with the right dimensions and weight

Thank you. I thought I did that, but missed something obviously. Printing this out and keeping with my shipping labels! Appreciate you taking the time to offer screenshots and all!
