Possible scam

So I sold some high end Disney collectible recently. I received a message today from a buyer who received their box 9 days ago, yet just now messaging me that the box was damaged and item destroyed. Then requesting I pay half the money back in 1 message, and then requested I pay them only $80 in another message. Definitely feel like a scam.

They sent me a pic of the box. But it doesn't look bad enough to cause that much damage A, and B, why request only half and then even less??? I'm at a loss here as things do NOT add up!

Re: Possible scam

Tell them this is serious enough that they should open a Not As Described dispute.

Scammers don't want to be on eBay's record, so he may drop it there.

Even if you have a No Returns policy, you are allowed to demand a return. You may have to pay return shipping.

When /if he does return the collectible, you will be required to refund. (And No Returns does not mean No Refunds).

No partial refunds. If it is good enough to keep, it's good enough to pay for.

If he bypasses eBay (to stay off their radar? because he has pulled this too often and cannot use the Money Back Guarantee?) he might go to Paypal

PP demands that the buyer pay return postage.

Which means he will be out his original payment plus the return shipping until you refund.

And if he is dishonest, he will think you are too, and won't want to have his money tied up while the package slowly returns to you. because he thinks you won't refund when it arrives.  He doesn't understand honest people.

Basically, he is bullying you.

And you can stand firm and play with his head.

There is a 50/50 chance that you will come out of this keeping the payment and, if he loses a Dispute, he cannot leave feedback.

Best wishes.

Re: Possible scam

Classic extortion scenario for this situation.  Read more here -- https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/feedback-policies/feedback-extortion-policy?id=4230

You at least have evidence via eBay messages to protect you from negative feedback.  Otherwise the "correct" solution here is to tell the buyer to return the item in question for a full refund.  Most of the time the buyer will stop there.  Good luck!

Re: Possible scam

Ye... ebay will not remove negative feedback in this kind of case. I have 1 negative feedback and ebay refused to remove it even thought buyer did not return item and promised positive feedback for a refund.

Re: Possible scam

even thought buyer did not return item and promised positive feedback for a refund.

So you refunded?

And he kept the item?

What reason would the buyer then have to change the feedback?

He got a thrill from cheating you and the cheat included the feedback.

You were scammed, nothing that eBay can or do about that.

No refunds without return.

And feedback is not used to assess seller accounts. The only ones who will ever read it are your future customers, and not even most of those. Most buyers think 95% is an A grade, instead of a seller who should be closed down.

Re: Possible scam

When a buyer opens a SNAD claim due to damage during shipping,  I request pictures of the damage so that I can file a claim with the carrier.  If the buyer won't send me pictures for proof of damage I accept the return  and make them return it for a refund.  I've only had a couple of those and the buyers didn't pursue it further.

Re: Possible scam

Selling to Disney collectors can be incredibly frustrating.  I had one person claim a LE pin I had sold them arrived damaged with no damage to outside packaging.  I was forced to allow a return.  I discovered upon receipt of their return that they had switched out their defective LE castle pin for mine.  Those pins were notorious for not closing properly.   The hanger card was also considerably bent.  Fortunately,  I had taken many photos before shipping, so ebay funded their return and I reported the Buyer and blocked them.  I put a warning to Disney scammers on my listings now.
