Hi all, I am looking for a little help here, I sold a card April 1st and sent it out April 2nd, I sent it via standard envelope shipping with tracking (ESUS eBay tracking). The buyer opened an Item Not Received (INR) case yesterday May 17th saying that he hadn’t got the card. Tracking shows the item scanned at a couple locations on May 3rd and May 4th. Normally I will file a missing mail location with USPS and provide them with the First Class tracking #, well problem is USPS does not treat ESUS standard envelope tracking #s as real tracking numbers. So not sure what I can do here? Will eBay refund the person or reimburse me if I refund them? I don’t want to ask them to step in and them ding me with a defect.

I use ebay int'l standard all the time. I had 2 lost packages and they refunded me within 24 hrs of my claim. All packages have $100 insurance included. You will probably have to make this claim.

I'm not sure if I can be of much help with this particular instance but I'll let you know my experience with late deliveries and open cases as a seller. (none however using the ESUS)
1. Contact USPS and see if they are able to give any updates. Since it doesn't have a 'real' tracking number I'm not sure if that will help. (assuming ESUS is not insured)
2. Contact eBay and let them know. You can usually just ask them questions about a transaction without actually escalating the case. (via chat)
3. If you get no where with either of those and you dont want a defect I would just refund the buyer.
Hopefully the item wasn't of much value. Next time try to ship priority and then if the buyer doesn't recieve the item, you can refund them, and the post office will then refund you)
eBay usually gives you an extra 8 or 10 days once the buyer opens a INR case as long as the package shows it has been scanned in and that there is still movement on the package. If you refund, eBay will not reimburse you, they will side with the seller. Even if the buyer recieves the item after you refund, you're out of luck.

Try talking to the buyer and if he agrees to wait - great.
If not then just wait till buyer is about able escalate the case and then issue a refund.
Or you can risk a defect and wait till buyer escalates the case/item gets delivered. If buyer escalates the case buyer will get refunded either way.
Ebay may work with you since there are many delays happening due to many reasons but i have no recent personal experience.

I appreciate the reply and the advice. I will probably just refund them in a couple days. My sales are down big time since eBay has made all of the recent ridiculous changes to the sports cards categories and item specifics.

Thank you for the reply. I’ve had similar experiences just not with the seemingly fictional ESUS tracking lol. It is for low end items only. I understand the give and take, some form of tracking is better than no form of tracking.

Thank you!! I think I will do that. So I will refund the buyer then after 30 days (from last tracking update? Or item sent date maybe?) start a claim?
Seriously thank you, solution found!

Just wanted to let everyone know this was definitely the solution. I filed the claim, filling in basic info that shows tracking stopped, then shows the complaint from the buyer, item #, ESUS tracking #, etc. So then I refunded the buyer so I did not get a seller defect, then eBay refunded me within one day!!
Thank you thank you thank you stuff4divas! It’s not necessary about the $12, it’s about the peace of mind I now have that eBay will refund if you can prove you sent on time, etc.
