Free Priority Mailer Used For Packing Material

This has been brought up here before but was generally an accepted practice if the item was shipped Priority Mail.

In my case the seller used a free USPS Priority Mail Express Flat Rate Bubble Mailer for packing on a item that was shipped USPS First Class Mail. They also shorted the weight by 2oz's.

I'm thinking about stopping at my local PO with the package and seeing what if anything the Postmaster has to say about it.

Any thoughts as far as going to the PO or should I just let it go.

TIA

The Commercial Base price can range from 13 to 28 cents for an additional ounce on First Class packages.

I would rather keep that money in my pocket.

Re: Free Priority Mailer Used For Packing Material

Update: I went to the PO with all shipping materials and spoke with my friend the Postmaster.

First off he weighed it and just as I said the weight was off by 2 oz's.

Then he opened the Priority Express Bubble mailer, handed me the item that was inside of it and thanked me for bringing it in.

He told me there has been a problem with people using the free supplies in this way and the PO is trying to crack down on it since it just costs them and eventually the consumers in the long run.

What exactly he's going to do with the package and packing materials I don't know nor did I ask.

All I know is I feel that I did the right thing by reporting it and that the less than 10 minutes of my time spent wasn't wasted doing it. (No gas was wasted since I went next door to the PO to do grocery shopping.)

If some of you feel like bashing me for reporting it go for it cause I really don't care what you think.

As far as the others, thank you for the support.

Re: Free Priority Mailer Used For Packing Material

We do this from time to time but, not with a  fresh, new Priority bubble mailer.  We recycle anything and everything we can.  If we receive something in a Priority Mail Flat Rate Padded Envelope and it is in good condition, we often remove the label and use it for added protection on packages.  Or, sometimes we will accidentally cut the top one with a box cutter when opening a fresh package of them.  Instead of throwing it away, we will repurpose it.  I don't see anything wrong with doing so.  However, if someone is using a fresh, undamaged one to ship with I don't agree with that.

I tried to contact the seller about it and received no reply so apparently they don't care.

I told them that this is a pet peeve of mine and that I would be taking the package to the PO and let them decide what they want to do about it. I did not open the sealed Priority Express bubble mailer that was used as packing since I know whats in it so that the PO can see the item is still inside it as I got it.

I feel that in a situation like this if free shipping supplies are not used as intended, as in this case, the PO should go after the shipper and at least charge them the full retail rate for Priority Express.

Once the pkg has been opened by you, and not in front of a postal employee, it leaves the situation open to interpretation.

Not saying you did this, but in a court of law, let's say, what proof is there that you did not take the item and put it in the express envelope yourself?

Unless you want to have forensics and fingerprints done on it, there is a possibility that it was you, not the shipper, that sealed the item in that envelope. And if so, it would take the 2oz weight off the pkg.

Having said that, in the end, only you can decide what your ethics and time are worth.

Having a Postmaster as 'your friend' taints the entire situation.

But 'right on' by following up on what you believe in.

Re: Free Priority Mailer Used For Packing Material

I'm not sure what exactly you are mad at?

the fact that is was 2 oz short?  did you have to pay the postage? did USPS charge the seller as per their own policy?

and if it was in a priority packaging but a 1st class label...wouldn't that be an issue that the usps should notice on their own and charge the seller the proper amount?

if the seller used the bubble wrap inside a 1st class package...well seems unfair but sometimes you gotta do what you have to...and it may have been used before? I use packageing -wrap that i get in packages...bubble envelopes used to send to me...I've use to pack stuff and/or to send something out--being I reuse and recycle stuff usable....

AND if you sooooo worried about the USPS..yes go tell them...doubt they can do anything more than they have/are doing....except charge for all , to all for everything.... AND not that it isn't proper, BUT if USPS rally didn';t make more on these free boxes , etc....they would GIVE them away.... yes they loose occionally and yes that means that someone else pays for it...but honeestly do you want them to open all packages, stop all packages..that  have use materials?...and who said an old box once used or envelope once use...can't be used again?

so i agree , sellers and people should follow a rule...so that's what feedback is for...but are there not bigger issues out there?

OMG! Is this correct?

Should the OP be so sanctimonious if they DID NOT get Mooneyes permission?
