They are not free, but you get a coupon each quarter based on your store size to reduce the cost.

Just order free shipping supplies from the post office.

Many of the needed sizes for boxes aren't available from the post office.  Many of the needed supplies for mailing First Class, Parcel Select, and Media Mail are not available from the Post Office.

The PO is great for ordering all your Priority Mail boxes and envelopes.. free.. in bulk.. delivered to your door.  But for many sellers, that just isn't enough for their business needs!

You obviously don't ship things that weigh more than 1 lb and don't fit in the stupid flat rate box sizes.

What is the cost to send a two pound package via Parcel Select to Zone 5?

What is the cost to send a two pound package via Priority Mail (not in flat rate packaging) to Zone 5?

I wouldn't know because at 2lb+ I'm usually shipping SmartPost!  Smiley Happy

How about to zone 8, and the package is larger than 1 cubic foot?

To the closer zones, Priority and PS are about the same up to at least 5 pounds or so.

To further zones, and over 1 CF, that's where PS comes in.

I see too many sellers using parcel select on things that would actually be cheaper sending priority.

Since you don't know the costs for Parcel Select or Priority Mail, how are you qualified to make any statement about the proper use of either service?

I would be using UPS Ground for that package because it is reasonably priced and is guaranteed to be delivered in five business days.

At current prices, Priority Mail Commercial Base prices are identical to Parcel Select (or just 5 cents more) for Zones 1 - 8 for weights up to 18 pounds.  So Parcel Select makes sense only if your package is over 18 pounds (and/or over 1 cubic foot and going to Zones 5+).

Occasionally it is a little cheaper than Priority, so occasionally it's what a buyer prefers.  They don't mind waiting an extra day or two, just happy to spend less on the postage cost to get their merchandise.

Some of the higher or lower cost factor to Parcel Select depends on where you live, where you ship from.. and to.  I think for some sellers, it isn't a sensible option at all.  For others perhaps it's a good choice to offer.
