Does USPS weight packages with pre paid shipping labels if you put them in the overnight box instead of handing them to a clerk?

Yes, they weigh them at some point during normal postal hours, although it may be late afternoon when they can finally get around to it.

Sorting centers are now being equipped with machinery that weighs and measures packages automatically as they are processed.

Almost none of the packages are weighed or measured.

Yes USPS sorting centers do have weight machines for packages that go through their facilities now. They have started to really crack down on people who ship with too little shipping and tack on the additional charges to the person picking up the package before they can receive the package.

I'm gonna go with "sometimes".
And "Why?"

Ayup... which makes the original question moot. Chances are the package will be weighed sooner or later. Whether an overweight/underpaid package will be returned to the sender or delivered with Postage Due is hard to say (I suppose it might depend on where it was detected during its travel), so it's best to just be sure of your package weight before you drop it off. Making it past your local post office does not guarantee you anything.
