Increase Time Allowed To Edit Post

Hi!

I recently had an experience where I said something and posted it and when I thought about it further decided it was a bit more snarky than intended.

I went back to edit the post and the time  was up. I believe it was 15 minutes.

I know the suggestion will be to think before I post.😉

I admit I didn’t do that.

But was wondering if the community would ever consider extending the time frame to edit. It would come in handy in several different situations, in my opinion.

Thanks for hearing me out.

Exactly what timeframe are you suggesting? An hour? 48 hours? A week?

The problem with your suggestion is that during the 15 minutes you contemplated the appropriateness of your post (although I believe it's a five-minute window) other members will have read it and oftentimes already replied. It's unfair to other members to have posted responses based on the comments you've submitted, only to have you revise them after having the opportunity to read their replies.

I think extending the time period allowed for edits is a bad idea. I know I would not be pleased to take the time to compose a response to anyone's post--no matter what the subject matter--only to discover the author had changed the post.

You've been around long enough and have enough posts under your belt to know whether your comments are or are not appropriate as your composing them, or at least within the current editing timeframe. You also know if you post something inappropriate, you may experience the consequences.

If you are unhappy with your reply, you may contact a moderator using the "Report Inappropriate Content" option and request that they delete or edit your comment for you. They are not obligated, but may be willing to do so if it's an infrequent request.

I was unhappy with my reply and did exactly what you suggested. Everything worked out. 🙂

I was advised to bring it here and start a thread.

I did so to see if anyone else had the same thoughts.

As I predicted in my OP, the standard response would be think before you post. The amount of time one has been here or the amount of posts is not relevant as we ALL know of posters who occasionally post things that were better left unsaid.

Thank you for answering. Differing opinions are good.

It's not always about that... Sometimes, one needs to clarify what they have said... Someone may have gotten dyslexic when they were typing away... or someone may have an additional thought... There's a multitude of reasons why someone would enjoy a little bit longer editing time frame. if one posts a comment on YouTube, they are given months (if not indefinite) to edit or delete a comment. The sun still rises in the east, and sets in the west.

P.S... I just had to edit, because of a typo. 😊

@tigercatt-16   I know on a few occasions I tried Editing but the time had expired ... but we're talking just a few minutes.  I think the risk could be that if the time is extended too long others may have already replied to the original post AND based on the changes those replies may be inaccurate.

The other option of course is to use the Report link for inappropriate content on the specific post in question (The Community's phrase not an accusation) and advise the Mods you would like that post removed so you can replace it with a new modified or corrected version since it is past the edit time.

@tigercatt-16   For myself I wasn't even thinking in those terms although your OP was specifically about that type of post.  I'm thinking more about the accuracy in answering another member's question on a specific eBay feature or function OR poor grammar I forgot to correct or like or like or like double words LOL ... yep, that happens.

Yes--that's why my first reply included:

"The problem with your suggestion is that during the 15 minutes you contemplated the appropriateness of your post (although I believe it's a five-minute window) other members will have read it and oftentimes already replied. Agreed--which is why I included that option in my first reply, as well:

"If you are unhappy with your reply, you may contact a moderator using the "Report Inappropriate Content" option and request that they delete or edit your comment for you. They are not obligated, but may be willing to do so if it's an infrequent request."

My problem (one among many, ha!) is that I oftentimes shoot first and ask questions later so to speak.

I know it’s hard to believe but I’m not this charming all of the time. 😂

So while I actually would be prepared to accept consequences for my words or actions, I truly felt that what I said would be hurtful.

I wasn’t trying to avoid moderation as much as wanting to not hurt someone’s feelings.

Anyway, a good point has been made by several here that it wouldn’t be fair to other posters.

I do understand that now.

I just did two back to back posts just to see if the "quote" function would carry an Edited previous post forward ... it does not.  I was just curious how it worked ...

The first post had "Test reply only ... 1-2-3".  I then replied to that and used the Quote function and posted it.  Next I went back to the first one and changed the numbers to "4-5-6" ... they were not updated on the quoted version ...

Excuse my curiosity on this ...

Too many times, there are those on the boards who are so anxious to challenge, berate, condemn, accuse, or question. that they, themselves, are the ones who need to read all the details. Engaging the eye and brain should come before engaging a key stroke. 😊
