sold a pair of shoes tonight and to my surprise the buyer's shipping address is to an authenticator apparently located in Astoria, NY along with an ebay reference number right in the address... is this ebay's doing or have people been using this specific address lately? scam? should I be worried if the buyer for some reason claims to not have receive the item?

It's eBay's doing. It's not a voluntary program. eBay decides what
listing they want to put that on and the seller has no choice.
I didn't look at all your listing but I see it on some more.
