Does anyone know why a listing would say "Limited Quantity Available" for the number remaining instead of give an actual count?

Could be a couple of reasons...
1) eBay marketing squad might think it has more pyschological impact. Many people are allergic to numbers.
2) It saves a calculation (you only have to check whether the number is under a certain amount and don't have to figure out exactly how many are left every time).

It is motivational, creating a sense of urgency for you to act now, when manny may be available.

It will usually say this on listings that started with a higher quantity available, like 100 or more, and a high percentage of those have already sold. I believe that when the quantity available goes to below 10, it will show the correct quantity.

for qty > 10 there is a checkbox to choose whether you want the exact count or a generalized statement, ie limited qty, etc.

It is a setting that sellers can use when there is more than a certain number of items.
