package refused trick

Here is one that I had never seen before, buyer buys item then a couple weeks later he wants to return it, I have free returns so no big deal. Later on the package comes back to me marked as "refused". 

I had no idea that you could receive a package, hold it for 2 weeks then take it back unopened to the PO and refuse it and it gets sent back with no additional postage due.

So it turns out what the deal is that they are having furnace problems, takes a guess at the part needed, later determines that is not the part needed so then "refuses" it.

This is one time that a buyers scheme actually saved me money as the return shipping would of been on me.

Yes and that buyer lost all buyer protection by refusing it too..of course, most sellers refund as they should.

I never thought of that. but I do not think that way as like you said most sellers do not either.

So technically if you refund fully without original shipping they can’t open MBG?

Anyone can refuse a mailing if it is unopened. Just mark it "Refused - return to sender" and cross out the addressee's address and bar code. If it is a numbered package, you must bring it to a post office so that you can receive a receipt that proves that USPS received it back.

But note in your OP, you did think that way: "This is one time that a buyers scheme actually saved me money as the return shipping would of been on me."

If you were going to refund the balance, then refund the balance.

Although it can be done, it's a violation of ebay policy and the buyer is NOT entitled to a refund though many sellers will issue a refund after deducting the cost of shipping. The BUYER won't have protection.

@bashort Has the buyer opened a return or INR dispute?

Absolutely correct......and, in fact, Concierge advised me NOT to refund as the buyer had run me around the block on canceling/refunding/rebuying..........and then finding out the address was wrong, but wanted it remailed.  I didn't refund......and referred the buyer to ebay.....as advised.

Technically the USPS does not have a time constraint other than mentioning "reasonable timeframe".

     In addition to the comments already posted as a side note I have found the Refused - Return to Sender to be an effective countermeasure to reducing the amount of junk physical mail I receive. Sometime ago I started returning junk mail to the sender and over a period of time the amount of junk mail I used to receive has diminished significantly. I am quite sure I have been removed from several mailing lists.  

     Saves paper, in long run reduces USPS workload, cuts down on my paper recycle.

As a seller I have never had a refused package and I always wondered whether the PO would charge me for it's return if it did happen, I learnt something, so thanks.
