PayPal was once an eBay owned company. eBay is no longer satisfied letting someone else take a small fee for providing the much needed secure money transaction. Now eBay wants that cut....but the problem is that the MP program/eBay is not near as secure as PayPal
Ultimately they are eliminating the middle-man. I personally really liked the eBay and PayPal combo, but it is what it is.
Can you prove that statement or are you assuming something?

There is nothing to prove
Open up the eyes and look
It has always been eBay sale --> PayPal transaction --> Bank Account
Now it is just eBay sale --> Bank Account
Eliminating the middle-man, pretty obvious to me

The Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 requires payment processors like PayPal and eBay to file a 1099K for any taxpayer who meets certain thresholds (which can vary by state).
Since payment processors have no idea what payments might come into an account during the year, they collect the taxpayer ID number beforehand so that they do not find themselves out of compliance with the law after a payment comes in.
So no - they do not "need" your SS#.
You are the one who "needs" them to have it if you want to use eBay.
It is more complicated than that and Ebay does NEED to collect SSNs if for no other reason to meet the requirements of verifying the identity of the account holder per the Anti Money Laundering laws. It is also why PO box address aren't good enough anymore as the primary address. It has to be a physical address.

This is just a very good example of why it is important to read the emails you get from Ebay. Certainly some aren't going to affect you, but others will. So it is always in your best interest to review them.
Below is some information you will want to review so you can better understand what the program is about and so you can make an informed decision on what is best for you. Stay selling on Ebay or going.

Dear mam98031,
I hear rumors that you are a ebay employee. 😉
We've know each other for years. Can you get me some cool ebay swag? Shirts? Caps? I'm a size XL and my favorite color is blue.
Aloha,
James

You're a funny guy!
Not until I get some of my own!!! This past Christmas was the first time in all my years on Ebay that they actually sent me some stuff. So you may have to wait a few more years before I have enough to share, LOL.

Because 2.9% of $100 billion is $2.9 billion.
eBay would rather see sellers pay that $.29 billion to eBay instead of to PayPal.
Less the 0.55% reduction in the FVF on the product and shipping on that $100 billion in sales.

I was trying to cleverly state that an individual seller "needs" eBay more than eBay "needs" that seller.
Whoops, my bad!
