ebay Launches Consignment Offering

Good news, sellers! Too busy to sell your own stuff? ebay has now launched a consignment service!

Of course: "For now, the service is reserved for designer handbags by brands including Prada, Chanel, Hermès and Louis Vuitton, but will expand next year to include other categories."

So, admittedly, this might limit the number of sellers taking advantage of this service in Q4....but nice to see ebay realizing the economic struggle is real, and making an effort to help sellers struggling with their closets full of Chanel and LV bags.

Re: ebay Launches Consignment Offering

I wonder what the fees are going to be for that service. From what I gather eBay provides the label to ship to the eBay warehouse/facility then they handle the actual listing, shipping, etc. Brings up some interesting questions with regards to any potential INR's, NAD's and/or chargebacks. Sounds a lot like Amazon FBA or 3PL type ecommerce providers. Lot more information needs to go out about this program/service.

EBay does nothing to "help the seller" their focus is on their own bottom line. You can bet there is something in this for eBay.

Didn't they already try this?

You may be thinking of the "pop-ups" eBay did a couple of years ago, which said scheme sounded entirely weird to me:

And, of course, there used to be the Trading Assistant Program and the Valet Program, but those were for all items and eBay itself was not the seller.  Both tanked because selling for others has too many problems and pitfalls.

I read it differently, ........individual consignment sellers will do the listings........

giving users direct access to expert sellers who will list and sell their luxury items on their behalf. Launching initially for designer handbags......

To power the service at launch, eBay has partnered with Linda Lightman, founder of Linda's Stuff, and a leading seller of luxury goods.

Re: ebay Launches Consignment Offering

Why would sellers not have time to list their own high-end handbags? eBay has streamlined the listing process, right? Most sellers are seeing a 50%-90% drop in sales for the past 2 years, so that should leave free time to list thousand dollar items. Is eBay going to take 100,000 common baseball cards on consignment and have their A.I. list them? That may be helpful to a seller.

This is to "widen" the inventory.....to get to owners who want to sell, but don't want to sell themselves.......

Re: ebay Launches Consignment Offering

I think this is great for people who want to sell BUT dont want to be a seller.

Dont want to set up managed payments and do the listings.

Dont want to deal with charge backs and returns.

Dont want to deal with new seller payment holds.

The commission is fair considering what local consignment shops charge and eBays fees and someone else doing all the work.

Most of us don't have a pile of these bags to list - for someone with one or two bags and who is a very casual seller, it makes sense to consign to someone experienced in dealing with this market, which has all of its own quirks.
