Can you turn ON/OFF promoted listings when ever you want?

I've never tried promoted listings.I have an item where i recently where from separate listings to a variations listing.It's a popular item that i sold lots of. Since doing that, i lost all my sales stats.My new variations listing started at 0 sales....
