Ebay refunded my 'buyer', a scammer in Woburn Mass. They didn't have to, his funds were being held by PayPal and were released by Paypal, did he get paid twice ? Ebay are charging me final value fees on a worthless piece of trash returned by the scammer but setting the value on the auction price. So I'm out the $150 shipping fees and final value fee of $200. So who are the scammers , Ebay or the person who took my valuable turntable, swapped out parts and broke others. ? I have photographs the 'buyer' took himself showing

the mistreatment of parts,  he didn't realise you can see them in the background. So now I have to sue him in small claims court because Ebay doesn't stand behind their own policy. I will certainly never use ebay again and will be closing out my paypal acct. If I win my case against the 'buyer' I will certainly contemplate going after ebay . This buyer has obviously done this before but ebay will take no resposibilty for their 'marketplace'. I will be contacting local television watchdogs to see if they are interested in this nonsense.

Good luck to you. It's becoming so depressing to keep reading stories like yours.  You're right, eBay really has only the buyers back. Not the sellers. Very hopeful that you can win in small claims court.

Everyday I sign on to this board there are more and more scammer stories.  This is because ebay allows it and the scammers know it.  I will never sell an expensive item here.

So sorry this happened to you. Selling items like those you sold is a very dicey proposition on eBay.

To address your issues:

1) No, your buyer was only refunded once. (They came from the monies on Hold.)

2) Yes, you'll be charged fees on the value of the item + s&h + sales tax (if applicable). 'Value', in your case, being the $1888 final bid plus $47.83 s&h... plus any taxes your buyer paid.

3) If you paid more to ship than you charged your buyer... yes, you're 'out' that expense, too.

I wish I could paint a prettier picture, but I can't. Good luck to you moving forward.

@264nik8

Boy that sure does stink. I am really sorry that you had to go thru this and such a nice job on that listing as well.

Try those tv watch dogs, something has got to change around here because it's just getting worse.

Go after that scum bag buyer. Please!

I don't sell anything that expensive. However, something that I have done in the past is accepted the return, then the buyer returns it with missing parts or not the same item. I deduct 50% from the refund, the max allowed. Again, I don't have that much to loose. So it helps with my shipping and I move on.

Everyday is a new post like this and I really wish that ebay would step up and do something. But as we all know, it will not go so well if they do.

They stand behind these policies:

"You agree to comply with the policy and permit us to make a final decision on any eBay Money Back Guarantee case."

"eBay has no control over and does not guarantee: the existence, quality, safety or legality of items advertised; the truth or accuracy of users' content or listings; the ability of sellers to sell items; the ability of buyers to pay for items; or that a buyer or seller will actually complete a transaction or return an item."

The 50% refund deduction is the only reason that I keep my TRS status and offer 30-Day Returns... for the off-hand chance that a Return comes back de-valued. Your Free Returns policy offers the same seller protection. Like you, I've used it before. It's one of the last seller protections left.

Unfortunately, the OP doesn't have either available... not yet TRS and using a No Returns policy. As you have lived to tell, @264nik8... 'No Returns' does not mean 'no refunds' on eBay. All we sellers empathize, but can't fix it.

This all really is a perfect setup for eBay.

What goes on here reminds me of that great scene in "Trading Places" where Randolph and Mortimer explain to Billy Ray what commodity brokers are:

"The good part, William, is no matter whether our clients make money or lose money, Duke & Duke get the commissions."

Just swap out the word "sellers" for "clients," and "eBay" for "Duke & Duke," and you got what happens every day on this site.

If you had accepted the return, you would not be paying a Final Value fee penalty. Ebay charges the FVF on cases where the customer asks eBay to step in.

To survive eBay, it is important to know the policies that govern the site, so you can mitigate the risk of selling here. You are a new seller with a pricey item. The scammers target such accounts, hoping to catch sellers unaware of the liabilities of online sales.

There is no way to prevent a “faulty” return such as you experienced. It is the greatest risk of selling on eBay. All that can be done is to know what the risk is before ever listing such an expensive item.
