Why sell on eBay

I know this seems like a weird question, and I am about to age myself.  But with all the discussions, scams and issues with buyers, why sell on eBay?  It never seemed to be this complicated the last time I sold on eBay over a decade ago, or even bought anything on eBay.  Now I'm here trying to sell a bunch of stuff to save money and make room for another baby, and I'm starting to wonder would it just been easier to try and sell this on another platform, granted I may just run into the same issues.

I still have more items to sort through and list, so I'm not done with listing items.

I know I am reading the issues only, because why post positive stories on a message board, but reading this makes me wonder if all buyers are A***oles, and eBay has just plummeted in value.

Re: Why sell on eBay

Hi,

I've looked at some of your listings and noticed you sell quite a few coins for less than $2 with free shipping.  Do you ship these coins without tracking info?  If so, what has been your experience with this.

I have some I'd like to list but am hesitant about shipping them with no tracking information.  If I were to sell some of these coins at less than $2, I would lose money on each one given that the lowest shipping cost with tracking is more than that.

Re: Why sell on eBay

I can't speak for anyone else, but I sell here because I make money. I've tried many other selling websites - Amazon, Etsy, Bonanza, Mercari - and there is no market for the type of stuff I sell. I tried my own website - lots and lots and lots of work, lots and lots of money, never a single penny of profit over a three year timespan. I never got out of the red.

Issues are few and far between, and if they do crop up I just handle it and move on.

It works for me. That's why I'm here.

You seem very disgruntled with Ebay so why sell here ? 22 years and never a scam so take it as you please.

Re: Why sell on eBay

...I tried selling on eBay at first with all my Coach handbag collections...it was fun until I hit a bump when I received eBay's invoice for FVF at the end of month...cause I didn't know well at that time...

...between BIN and Auction, I prefer BIN base on my bad experience of selling my Coach with so low bidding...I had to commit my contract with buyers, so swallowed my tears and said "good-bye" to my beautiful Coach collections...I still have quite some more but I hesitate to list them...

...selling here is not a main source income...it's a side job and the profits will be used for pot-luck party at my workplace, bday's gifts, charity donations, holidays and vacation portion spending...it expects all my attention if I want to be a well-manner seller...oh, and every years file income taxes for this minor income is "a pain on the neck" on paperwork compares to W-2...

...many things I don't agree with eBay policies, rules, or regulations but too bad, it's their house so I self-remind "suck it up, butter cup"...

...the recent rising of buyers-scammers makes me more careful in listing my items...well, I had at least 3 full albums of Pokemon collection cards from the 90's, plus all the Disney cartoon movies VHS tapes that I bought for my son...one of those Pokemon's cards was auctioned for thousand of dollars on here, I saw that but don't dare to list them...

...so to me, selling on eBay is a sunny, rainy, cloudy, windy, even snowy day with moonlight and rainbow...

Re: Why sell on eBay

My buyers are awesome. In over 10 years of selling, i have never encountered a fraudulent buyer. And as for the platform, I have no bone to pick with eBay. If i keep up with the changes and the policies, i feel well prepared to sell here.

Every once and awhile i won’t be in agreement with eBay on how they handle things, but that has never made selling a problem.

People come to the forums to vent, complain and bash eBay. It can make it seem there are scammers around every corner, and unhappy sellers every way you turn. But that has not been my experience.

Good luck to you and wish you much success on your rekindled efforts to sell on eBay!!

EBay has taken choices from sellers. If they haven’t forced you to update to their new payout policy they will soon. When you’re sitting around waiting on those funds well after a week since the item was delivered, you will see the option EBay has for holding your funds for absolutely no reason. The fee’s are higher and payouts aren’t as quick like they claim. I was getting my money through Paypal immediately and never an issue with a buyer. Now they sit on the payment simply for greed....to gain interest from money that isn’t theirs.

That's because Paypal fronted you the money while they waited for it. Ebay does not do that.

Re: Why sell on eBay

Marketplaces are good places to sell sundry junk replete with items specifics, condition declarations, and SNAD concerns.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Websites lend themselves to a singular line of fine items devoid of issues.

And even when you sell a singular line of fine items devoid of issues - in my case handmade candles and soaps - it's a chore.

Nice diss at my current line of merchandise, BTW. Didn't think I'd notice, eh? 🙄

Re: Why sell on eBay

I'm not sure if it has the 'widest' audience anymore but it certainly has an audience.  People just watching.  lol   Believe me - items still sit forever.  Even if you have the only one posted on eBay & it has 650+ views.  It feels like the spinning circle on the internet & the page doesn't advance.   😛    Stay safe all.    🙂

Re: Why sell on eBay

Don't make things more complicated then they should be

Are you going to sell and run into buyers that want refunds, discount- sure in any business this happens

Are you going to run into scammers wanting something for free - sure in any business this happens

If you are in sales any loss can happen, also any profitable gain can happen

I would suggest thinking about what you are selling and if you want to take a loss on t and claim it on taxes or if maybe a cash only garage sale is in your future

Re: Why sell on eBay

I just now read this question for the first time, and don't know what other responders have answered... but I will say this:   Ebay has the traffic.  It's as simple as that.

Maybe someday in the near future, other sites will be as popular.  We shall see.

From what I read, eBay has shot itself in the foot so often, it's running around on it's knees right now.  Don't know how much longer it can do the nasty's it's been doing and still remain on top.  We shall see.
