Even in the UK other sellers may say...

You just noticed this now?

You agreed to the fees.

Surely you are rolling all fees & costs into the price of your items?

Many years ago, eBay did not charge fees for shipping.  Savy sellers (or dishonest sellers, depending on your perspective) would structure their listings so as to avoid the eBay on the item ... like selling a $20 item for $1 plus $24 shipping.

So, to prevent sellers from circumventing eBay fees, eBay started charging fees on everything.

I agree full heartedly! I complained about this as well, Ebay is charging way too much for petty things, and they seem to be forgetting " IT'S OUR STUFF!" I'm not doing well on Ebay and I'm a long time member. In the beginning....they were not as GREEDY as they are today. They seem to be forgetting, without "OUR STUFF" they would not exist.

Sure we roll all the fees into our costs.  How oes that answer the question of why there would be a fee on shipping costs?  I don't see how or why Ebay deserves it.

It’s your stuff. Great. You seem to be forgetting it’s their site. If you don’t sell your stuff here, buyers will buy someone else’s stuff. Have you found a better site? Have you tried to figure out why you’re not doing well?

That was explained in post #3. The change was made nearly a decade ago.

Total price is the most fair way to allocate fees. If it wasn’t assessed on the total then fees would be higher on the item price. Ebay will not leave fees on the table.

if someone sells a ball worth $20 total they should pay the same fees whether they offer “free” shipping, actual shipping or shipping and handling.

Lame excuse. Charging fees on other companies service is fundamentally wrong.
And those fees don't help their service anyway: poorly built seller's interface, almost non-existent customer service, lazy case resolution center.

Fundamentally wrong?  It is as American as red, white, and blue.  eBay is charging a fee on managing pass-through money ... it is done by dozens and dozens of businesses in the US, including PayPal, banks, insurance agents, stock brokers, 7-Eleven's handling of Western Union Money Orders, etc.

One of the very first items that I ever purchased on eBay 16 years ago, was a first generation X-Box, long before I ever bacame a seller.

The X-Box cost $30.00

The shipping cost was $250.00

I do remember thinking at that time that that was kind of an odd buisness model. But I knew very little about the internet or internet sales at that time. But I was not overly concerned about the seller or the transaction, because every other seller selling game platforms and other high dollar electronics on eBay was pricing their items in this same odd weird fashion. I just figured that it had something to do with taxes and tax avoidance on the part of the sellers.  It was not until I became an eBay seller myself many years later, that I learned the reasonings behind all of those odd and strange looking listings

Now that I am an eBay seller, do I like the fact that ebay taxes my buyers 9% on their shipping cost, because of a few bad actors in the past? No

Is eBay going to stop taxing my buyers 9% on their shipping costs anytime soon? I doubt it.

I remember many video games being listed for a penny or even 99 cents with the shipping cost of $20-30, or even more. Those sellers spoiled it for the rest of us.

Nobody likes the fee on shipping, but we do understand why ebay went that route.

Yep I remember those $ 0.99 video games. What a bargain those were!

You have described what happened as well as anybody could in as few words as possible, and you are 100% correct. The down side is that ever since that change where 'FVF on Shipping' was born, sellers have either been forced to increase their overall pricing making them less comptitive to their peers, or simply eat the added fees, and except them as a 'cost of doing business' perhaps? I have also seen some sellers compromise. Some will share the costs of shipping with their buyer. For example: Actual shipping = $8. Seller charges $5. This seller will remain competitive with his or her peers due to better 'low price' positioning in the search results, BUT they will also pay a small fee to eBay on costs that they themselves were willing to absorb.

It is what it is, and it is our reality. It is a policy in place that will most likely remain in place.

We all need to be flexible enough to adapt when new situations present themselves. If we can be flexible, and adapt quickly to change, we may find that our pathway to success may be less rocky, less hazardous, less stressful with almost every endeavor.

Happy Holidays to all!

No the true reason they put the fees on shipping because it put extra money in their pockets.
