When do you start asking people to pay for an item they've bought? And when to you contact ebay when they haven't paid? Thanks.

When it came and went I asked again ... always nicely ... and they said their check didn't come in and they could pay a month later. I told them I was going to have to follow ebays and let them know what was going on because of the time involved. They thought I was being pushy and I didn't think they'd pay, but when I contacted them the next month they ended up paying. I just wasn't sure of the amount of time ebay gave for me to open a case. I like to give people time because unforeseen things can happen. Thanks for all the info. 🙂
You get the eBay Badge of Patience. After 30 days you would not be able to recover fvf's. I let eBay do its thing. After 7 days I send an invoice. If I don't hear anything in by next day I open a unpaid case.

In my TOS used for auctions I state the I expect payment via PayPal within three business days of auction closing. I use to allow 10 business days or approximately two weeks before eBay banned the use of mail-in forms of payment.
For fixed price listings or the use of BIN on auctions, I require payment with order or as eBay call it, immediate payment required (IPR).

But remember if you manually open a UPI you have to manually close it too. Ebay doesn't do anything on them. It's why so many of us use the automatic unpaid item assistant. Just set it for however many days you are comfortable waiting and forget it.
For special circumstances, you can also turn it off on any transaction.

@luckykey3... when a buyer uses eBay's checkout system & pays via online approved electronic means, eBay's computers can detect these payments & will auto-close an Unpaid Item Dispute.
Where it gets tricky: If a seller accepts cash/check/money order (still allowed in some categories & for items picked up locally), then the seller has to manually close his UPI case... eBay's computers can't detect these payments. If the seller doesn't manually close the case (even though he's been paid), it can irreparably harm the buyer.
This applies to eBay's UPI Assistant, as well as manually opened UPI cases.
Graciously grin when you growl...

I guess I will never ever understand people needing time to pay.
In my opinion you should be bidding on stuff if you don't have the means to pay for it.
I mean, most people should be able to at least make a payment with Paypal credit or a credit card if they don't have the funds.
In my opinion there is never any good excuse not to pay immediately and that's why I use only fixed price listings with immediate payment required.

I always write '' the payment is due within two days of confirmed purchase'' at the end of every listing. I used to allow three days for payment but two days is actually working out better . Most of my buyers now make an instant payment , a few by the next day but everyone gets their payment in within the two day time frame . However if what you're encountering should happen ,, I would probably send another invoice after 48 hours with a friendly reminder that payment is now due . If I received no response I'd start a non payment dispute and relist the item. However everyone has their own way that works the best for them when these unfortunate things happen ,, I'm sure you''ll find yours . Good luck

You can open unpaid item case through resolution centre just after 48 hours after item sold or best offer received and accepted. Then you can close case after 4 days and get fees back. Total is 6 days.
But.. some buyers think is offensive to open unpaid item just after 48 hours (happened to me with a couble of buyers) so you can use probably 4 days to open a case + 4 to pay to a total of 8.
I recommend if you use best offer option to allow 4 days of non payment.
The reason for this is that some buyers who are not everyday ebay users even forget to check if seller accepted best offer.

Everyone has their own take on this situation, but I will share what works for me: On the 2nd day of no-pay I send a friendly reminder that payment is due and that an unpaid case is going to auto-open the next day (not true, but they likely don't know), and then I give them an 'out' by saying if you have changed your mind on this purchase please let me know and I will cancel the transaction.
95% of the people pay immediately after that email reminder. The other 4% pay after I open a UPI on day 3, and only 1% turn into a total non-payer. No one has ever taken me up on the offer to cancel the order.
I am glad it worked out for you by waiting a month for your buyer to pay. I would never have the patience.
