Variation listings and Inventory issues

Lately I've had a couple issues with items that were part of a listing that had "variations".  At the end of the time period, when the listing closed, I assumed that what would appear in "unsold" listings was the adjusted balance.

I then relist the listing with what I thought were the "remaining" variations.  Not so.  It seems like the "unsold listing" is a version of the original listing--and I subsequently have gotten orders for items that are not in stock.

I have more than 400 listings and I'm not sure that I should use the "variations" feature.  Have I missed something in how the "unsold lisiting" category works?

When you relist, you have to adjust the remaining balance.

If you set them up as good till canceled, you won't have that problem

It has always been this way.  You need to review the listings before reposting them and make sure you inventory accounts are correct.  You may want to consider doing GTC listings so you don't run into this problem as often.

A relist has always recreated the original listing without any quantity adjustments.  You should be using the "Good until canceled" option for listing duration instead.

I don't know why relist affects variation listings differently to the usual MQ listings but it always has.

On a 'usual' MQ listing, using relist retains the correct qty sold, and only on a sell similar does it revert to the original qty.

One would think a variation listing should operate in the same way, so I can see why sellers get confused.

Thank you! I will explore the GTC option. It would also be helpful if someone in the documentation, eBay made a note that the inventory variations do not update as one would think is the normal progression.

You can't go by what is "usual" for another site or by what you think is normal here on Ebay.  Ebay often has a different way of defining something or applying any particular policy.  

Here on Ebay they have NEVER treated the relisting of an MQ [multiple quantity and Variation Listing are treated the same in this respect on Ebay] in the "usual" way you depict above.  So on Ebay it is NOT "usual".  It just is not how they have handled them at all.

Unfortunately none of us here can help with that.  You need to get this recommendation directly to Ebay.  Maybe you could join the Weekly Chat next Wednesday and suggest this as it is a good suggestion.
