Thrift Store Type Selling

Hello everyone!

First of all, congrats to everyone on graduation!  I'm so sorry I was not able to make it to the last call.  I'm super bummed I missed it, but caught the replay on YouTube.

So my question (and to just get a conversation started here) is about broad item type store listing.  Anyone have experience in this regard?  I have quite a lot of different category items available and I'd like to find a way to maximize sales and keep inventory moving.  Anything specific I might want to steer away from?  I'm seeing low sales on media like DVD's, VHS, CD's and Books.

Also, I have a very large inventory of gently used pre-loved clothing still to be listed.  I wasn't planning to be a boutique shop, but with how much my wife has loaded me with hers and our kids clothing, I might just have to be for a while.  Would opening a second store be a better option if I have hundreds of items like that so they don't mix in with my collectibles?

Any thoughts and suggestions are welcome and appreciated!

Sincerely,

Michael Lytle

There are MILLIONS selling 'thrift store type stuff'. The REAL successful are the ones that have either very niche (few far between) items, or list 10's of 1000's of 'thrift store' type stuff.

There are over 30,000,000+ listings for 'clothing' and 20,000,000+ for jewelry alone.

Most CDs, DVDs, and VHS are worthless and can be acquired for 25 cents or less in quantity. The exceptions are hard to come by which is why they are exceptions.

Used clothing is highly competitive on Ebay and unless they are designer or highly desirable brands you are doing as well as can be expected and better than some sellers.

Most buyers will never visit your store so whatever you do is probably for your convenience. There are sellers with a single store and 20 - 30 categories who are doing well.

There is a new metric for Store Traffic under the Store tab which can give you data on how many are visiting your store.

With some of the media, if you can lot them up in common styles/artists, or genre, the cost of shipping (combined lots) can make it worth it for buyers. I would not worry too much about opening a store if you are concerned about the mix of your products. As others have suggested, apparel is rather bloated for the run of the mill items, and you may want to consider making lots of those if you have qty. It would be wise to keep the cloths in a lot of similar sizes.
