If I search for "Kenwood KX-W4040 Cassette Deck" the results that are displayed are basically all the Kenwood cassette decks. I would expect that in order for a listing to be a "Best Match" it should at least have the text "KX-W4040" somewhere is in the listing. No wonder sales are bad.

Your search as shown above will return items that match any of those keywords, Best Match will give preference to items that match the most keywords which is why you are getting Kenwood cassette decks putting the model number in quote marks and see what happens.
When I put the quote marks on the model number I get 11 results and they are all W4040 models.

Always interesting to me that "newly listed" gives a better result than best match.........without the quotes........

I really blame the mess on "Item Specifics"

Search results seemed really bad today. I was having to put stuff in quotes today to get the results I wanted.
It should not be that way. I was searching for some music, Artist name, title, media type. The results I got were all over the place different artist, different titles and even some different media types.
So I was left wondering why? Were these a bunch of promoted items? If that's the case it's no wonder people are on here complaining about slow sales, loading up search results with a bunch of junk isn't going to help sales.
I think a lot of buyers that would put in artist name, title and media type and get no results would just move on rather then start messing with filters or quotes.

I used to think that also. So once in a while when I get a weird search result I click it and look at the item specifics to see if that's what caused it and 90% of the time I don't see any reason the item specifics would have caused it. That, then leaves me thinking it was a promoted item.

100 % correct. They really think if I'm searching for an antique map and they show a turtle neck shirt in results that I'm gonna buy it. Sorry but you shouldnt have to use quotation marks in a search, that's ridiculous. My saved searches are a joke at this point. This morning on my saved search (Texas map) i was shown a pair of Adidas shoes. When I'm really searching I go to Google now as do most ebayers that know the routine.
