If you do not accept returns on your listings and a buyer opens a “not as described” return (through the eBay money guarantee) are they able to get a refund without even sending the item back to you? I’ve heard it answered completely differently from no to yes and I’m trying to get a definitive answer
to be clear I am talking about if you do everything right and do not make a single mistake within the return process . You accept the money back guaranteed return no questions asked and pay for the label immediately through the return case and wait but then nothing happens. The tracking doesn’t update cause the buyer never shipped. Clearly that’s not your fault as a seller but eBay is weird.
In the exact instance that I just described will eBay still force the seller to refund the buyer from their funds/bank account even though the tracking number that you purchased and provided through the return case itself never showed a single scan. In that case do they still force the refund on the seller just because he/she originally selected ‘no returns’ when they listed that specific item?

No, you give them a shipping label and they must show tracking that they sent it back before getting their money.

No; customer does not get refunded if they don't 'ship' the item back using the 'approved label' that you provided.
Was the customer in the same country as you?
If a customer did, contact ebay (best to use Ebay for Business on Facebook)

Was asking cause I sold something fairly expensive yesterday and looked at that buyers feedback and saw another seller saying that he bought from them opened a return but never shipped the item and still got a refund anyway. I don’t want to get scammed and Indont know if this is some new scam tactic.
Anyway I decided to do some research before shipping to this buyer and I saw some people saying on threads as recently as this year that if you don’t accept returns then the buyer can open a return through eBay money guarantee and get a refund EVEN if they never ship it back to you. I thought that was crazy cause that would be the easiest scam ever to pull off as a buyer but I know eBay likes to side with buyers so I thought I’d ask in a thread myself

If you responded to the NAD and did everything correctly when you responded to the case you can find the timelines and what action to take if the buyer never uses the label or returns the item.

That's the wonderful thing about the interwebs; people can say anything.
But that is NOT the system or the rule.
A NAD return doesn't have ANYTHING to do with a seller 'accepting returns' or not.
Of course, there is nothing to stop a buyer from using your label and shipping a box of rocks...but that's for another round-the-fire chat.

"are they able to get a refund without even sending the item back to you?"
Sometimes. The buyer can keep the item and be issued a refund if the seller does not respond to the return request within the allotted time.

You have to agree to the return and let the buyer print out a return shipping label at your expense.
When you get the item back, you have 3 days to refund.
------------------------------------------------------------
If the item is not returned, you are not charged for the return label and there is no refund.
------------------------------------------------------------
The only way the buyer can get a refund AND get to keep the item is if you don't accept the return.

as the OP stated; they did all that- approved the return, issued a label etc.
Sorry, I missed that.
You are in the right. Ebay is in the wrong.
Contact them and raise hell until you get your money back.

eBay has made sellers refund and didn't require the buyer to return the item.
This used to be clear this only happens when the seller doesn't accept returns or when eBay had to step in and decide.

But even if you don’t accept 30 day returns on your listing if you accept the INAD return and do everything right. I mean You provide tracking to the buyer through the eBay money guarantee case then like everyone else above is saying the buyer doesn’t get a refund unless it’s scanned on its way with the exact tracking number provided. Are you saying the opposite of what everyone else has been saying?

Does anyone know what eBay does when the buyer ships back the INAD money guarantee return but the shipment disappears while in transit and never gets delivered back to the seller? How long will the buyer have to wait until they can ask ebay to step in? Will ebay automatically side with the buyer at that point? even though the seller did nothing wrong

There has to be proof of delivery back to the seller. eBay can't force the seller refund if they haven't received their item back.
