I don't, as a seller, use Signature Required unless it's $750+. The item shows delivered and there's nothing I can do about porch thieves, incompetent personnel, etc.
In all these years and thousands of packages shipped, I think I've had two items legitimately lost (in the bowels of USPS) and had to refund the buyers.
Delivery was attempted here the other day for a package that was Adult Signature Required and I wasn't home. Luckily (hah) someone from this house goes to the post office every day so no big deal but the listing did not say that it would be sent that way. I didn't get upset because I assumed it would be but not all buyers know of that $750 rule.
Point of the story: I always put in the listing, when applicable, "This will be sent to you with signature required at delivery per ebay's policy."
And I shuddered every time I mailed something to an Amazon buyer because of course I didn't use Signature Required for all of those packages. Besides the cost, I do think it peeves buyers, as others have said. I'm sure there are Amazon buyers who are aware of that policy and claim not received.
Something else I never really thought about: Not too long ago someone bought a very unwieldy widget that my Shipping Department was going to have to use all of his skills to frankenstein a box. The buyer, as it turned out, lives only 25 miles away and I offered to meet her somewhere closer to her. She lives in the District and doesn't have a car. She said just go ahead and ship because that cost would be less than an Uber or Lyft ride to meet me somewhere.
Interesting, eh? Another twist to the mail delivery issue. There are a lot of people (younguns) in this area that don't have cars, just like in NYC or other huge cities.
