Selling before item recieved

I'm new to selling, so excuse me, but I was wondering if I buy something, and have a purchase confirmation, if there's any rule against listing it on eBay without the product in my possesion. If there isn't anything against it, do I have to modify something in the shipping, so that eBay doesn't see it as if i'm not shipping something after it's sold?

Re: Selling before item recieved

I've purchased from retailers online many times and on occasion it has arrived damaged, not what I ordered (wrong size or color) or arrived late or not at all. This will be happening more as the holidays approach. It's your account that will get dinged if anything goes wrong. You asked a question and we are just giving you some friendly answers.

Re: Selling before item recieved

I WON"T list anything I do not have in stock, as others here have already said you're playing with fire, However I have seen alot of sellers listing items I know for a fact they do not have the items in stock because I know the Suppliers they deal with are the same as mine & they (the seller) will have an Extended Estimated handling time after receipt of cleared payment that jives with the time it takes for the supplier to ship it to them, my advice is get to know the ebay selling business before you make any Bold Business moves as it can get VERY Brutal at times I'm afraid.

Everyone calm down. I bought from a retailer. I'm not reselling something I bought off of eBay. So I wouldn't expect it to come damaged or arrive late or anything.

I recently received two damaged items from the big A, a "retailer". One was a book that was kind of beat-up and cheaply made in the first place. The other was a DVD with a badly damaged slip cover that banged against other loose stuff in the box.

I meant these to be Christmas gifts, and they were listed as "new". They are not in the condition I had hoped, even from a big "retailer" other than little-old-us ebay folks. I would not dream of listing (and vouching for an item's condition) before I even saw them.

Re: Selling before item recieved

You will take a high risk starting selling like this and 99% percent you will have problems with your acoount.

It is more than recommended to have under your possesion every item that you sell on ebay.

First of all to take your own photos and be 100% sure that the item you sell will ship to the buyer

in a correct matter of shipping time you used in the listing. (1,2,3 etc) business days.

If something goes wrong like item arrives damaged to you or late what explanation will you give to the buyer? You will have the option to cancel because out of stock or giving buyers a bad experience resulting in return cases or negative feedbacks.

This will kill your account before even it starts to sell.

So the answer is DO NOT DO IT!

"Everyone calm down."? I don't think anyone is over-excited.  We are just concerned that, no matter where you buy the item, accidents can occur. You wouldn't expect it to come damaged or arrive late? But what would be your contingency plan if that should happen?
