Selling a bone pin

I just tried to list a vintage bone pin.

I used sell similar & was prompted to add bone to the description.

There are a variety of bone items for sale, jewelry, hairsticks, knife handles.

But my listing was not allowed, under the live animal restrictions.

(I should have gotten a screen shot, but can't get back to the page unless I try to list again & am not going to because...

I know about ivory, but what's the story with this?

Apparently too many Sellers were playing games with the old policy. The current policy states:

The following wildlife products are not allowed: ....

  • Ivory or bones from ivory producing animals

When listing items using animal parts, you must state the species of the non-endangered or non-threatened animal...

So you need to specify the species that the bone is from, and it can't be from an animal that produces ivory or is on one of the prohibited lists.

Hi Lindy,

"Bovine bone" are the magical words you need.

Only if you know for sure that the bone is bovine 🙂

I used “bovine bone” on a pin and earring set recently and ebay pulled it. I was surprised.

Just FYI, ebay's uber-sensitivity to this issue is nothing new. I remember,, years ago, seeing on the boards, sellers complaining that they were unable to list vintage Elks Lodge member pins (Elk teeth) because of this.

Probably by someone who doesn't know what the word means. Shocking, I know ......

That is a possibility or someone looked over the listing and declared it ivory from sight alone and reported it to ebay. Doesn't mean they were right,  I don't think the reviews are done by experts, but seemingly randomly some listings that are reported do get pulled while other reported listings continue on forever and a day that are obviously misleading or banned items.
