Sell multiple similar items in one listing? (Variations not available)

I recently put up for BIN a number of Star Wars promotional photos. I made a separate eBay listing for each photo, but offered to send a revised invoice to lower the shipping fees for anyone who bought more than one photo. Even though I did not check the "Require immediate payment with Buy It Now," some sellers reported being forced to pay for multiple photos immediately. Of course, I refunded the extra postage, but it was a bit of a hassle for both of us. In one case, the "wait for invoice" approach worked.

Now I'm in another similar situation. I can't use Variations because that feature isn't available for my destination category. I ran across someone who's selling related but different photos in one listing, but I can't figure out how it's happening:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-Official-1969-NASA-11x14-APOLLO-11-Lithographs-12-prints-Choose-ONE-/1...

Do the seller and the buyer communicate after the purchase to determine which photos the buyer wants? There's no mention of that in the item description. Should I use this person's approach, only being a little clearer with potential buyers how it will work? Or should I go back to the one-photo-per-listing approach? If you recommend the latter, how do I avoid the instant-payment requirement that eBay was putting on buyers?

Thanks!

That type of listing is a violation of eBay's policy regarding choice listings. Choices in one listing are too confusing for potentially disappointed buyers. As well as evading listing fees.

Are you attempting to list in a different category than the example you provided?

Re: Sell multiple similar items in one listing? (Variations not available)

Thanks for your quick replies, NP and DB!

DB, as it happens, I do want to sell in the same category as that example I gave. However, "Historical Memorabilia" is not one of the categories that eBay supports with variations, according to their list:

https://pages.ebay.com/sellerinformation/sellingresources/multiplevariationslist.html

And indeed, I don't see any such option when I start to create a listing in that category.

Given NP's comment about that other person's approach not being acceptable, I guess I'm back to one item per listing, and hope that buyers don't keep encountering mandatory immediate payments?

Yes, I believe NP is correct, that example is a violation. It's so strange, I actually have part of this NASA set that I was going to list sometime in the near future (separately). I don't understand why you are having an immediate payment required issue. My only possible guess is some sort of flat or combined shipping rule needing to be created?

Re: Sell multiple similar items in one listing? (Variations not available)

DB, I think you're on the right track about shipping rules. I found one called "Create flat shipping rules" that lets me assign an amount for each additional item in a combined order. I'm a little fuzzy on when one would add or subtract the additional amount, so I'm not sure that I've set it up right! But at least it seems to address the issue of the single-item shipping charges being totaled up. Thank you.
