Scam or Post Office Problem - It's a Problem Either Way

I just got a message from a buyer saying "This item was listed as free shipping and I had to go to the post office and pay $3 something for shipping...........what's up with that?"

Tracking says this: Your item was delivered at the front door or porch at 4:14 pm on May 22, 2017 in PLAQUEMINE, LA 70764

If they held the package, shouldn't it show on the tracking?

If they really did charge her it could be one of two things. First it was a 15 ounce first class  package and I've read about some post offices not wanting to honor that. Also, I'm on commercial plus so maybe they just think I underpaid.

So far I've called 5 times. The first time I was hung up on...the next 4 no answer. This particular post office has very low ratings also. Two stars on Google.

I mentioned the tracking and she said that she noticed that too...I offered to refund if she would send a copy of the receipt. Of course the garbage man JUST came.

Re: Scam or Post Office Problem - It's a Problem Either Way

@yuzuha I've had it happen before where I brought package to PO and when they weighed it they said I owed more. I very nicely asked them to recalibrate their scale and weigh again. They did and confirmed my weight was accurate.

They (are supposed to) recalibrate their scales each morning. So if you go in the afternoon during a busy day they may need to be refreshed.

Other times I'm sure the seller's scale is off. Or there is user error on one end or the other. It happens.

Edit for typo

That package was 14 and change. I shipped it at 15 ounces.

@midohioimports My above post was just a general reply to the one above mine. it was not about your specific package. You can see my other posts on this thread to know that I agree with you here. 🙂

@copper.boom

I figured. I was more responding to whoever asked about why I was quoting 1-2 pound rates when the package was 15 ounces.

My daughter graduated from HS a couple hours ago so I'm navigating community on my phone for the first time.

Yeah, it really depends on the PO.  The one that I normally go to because it's a block from where I work is always accurate, but the larger one can be slightly off sometimes-- I imagine it's because they have a much higher volume of traffic than my little tiny nearby one.   And there is always the chance that my own scale might be off!  So I just add in that extra ounce to cover any possibility of error on any side.

Even if the PO made a mistake and had a worker that doesn't understand we get to ship packages up to 16 oz, even IF she had to pay postage, even IF she threw out the receipt (by accident I assume), people are not due a reimbursement for situations that they cannot prove, and never should they expect one. It is arrogant, entitled, and presumptuous.

Re: Scam or Post Office Problem - It's a Problem Either Way

And if 15oz was bumped up by the PO to 16oz that would be the Priority rate for 1-2lb pkg.

I'm assumimg the OP was accurate with the weight when shipped, and it is highly unlikely that the post office scale would be off by almost two ounces.  (How would they not notice that the first time they weighed an envelope?)  So the most likely scenario would be that the local Post Office was clueless that 15 oz parcels could go First Class, and upgraded to a 15 oz Priority package.  The price difference would probably be 3 bucks and change.

I plugged in OP's zip code and the buyer's zip code to calculate a 15 oz Priority package and got $7.40.  15 oz first class is $4.16 through eBay, so yeah, my guess is that that is what happened.

Who would think of seeking reimbursement for anything without a receipt?

I would have tossed the receipt in the trash before even walking out the PO door. Who would think a seller would not believe you for $3. Some people really should consider another job instead of on line selling. And to think the buyer already got burned having to go to the PO over a seller's mistake and then get accused of being a thief.

Agreed.
Of the two times that I didn't affix the correct postage for the package weight / dimensions, there were TWO items returned to me with a bright red stamp saying "INSUFFICIENT POSTAGE".

Re: Scam or Post Office Problem - It's a Problem Either Way

Several years back (this was back when you could still view and research other members bidding habits, which made it easier to snipe a last second bid) I paid $33 for an out-of-production part that I needed to complete a resto on my motorcycle. I never received the part, and for weeks the seller never replied to my emails or phone calls. I even went so far as to call a neighbor (thinking perhaps no reply=auto or other accident) using anywho.com to ask if he had seen him. he confirmed that the house was always hub of activity. I then contacted several other buyers who had won items from that same seller around the same time. Several replied that they hadn't received their items, but were hopeful that my problem was just a fluke. After filing a claim through the Post Master General (I sent my USPS money order payment through the USPS=making my claim against seller a mail fraud claim), I was informed that a woman with the same last name at the address was already under investigation for mail fraud.
Long story short, if a seller creates a shill account, or simply builds up feedback with piddly little items before bilking a bunch of people $3+ each, by the time eBay puts the clamps on it, it could be enough to make it worthwhile to them.
Remember, it only takes one person out of the million who are sent a phishing email to make it profitable. 😉

This seens the most logical.  PO upgraded.

@sockmonkeydave

Given that we get enough people coming to the boards complaining that their PO told them they couldn't ship a 13+ oz package via First Class, I wouldn't be surprised at all if this was a case of clueless USPS workers seeing that 15 oz on the label and assuming that it needed to be sent Priority.
