Got me to text regarding my item and then asked if I could add a 300 dollar gift card in the package and they would pay for it via paypal. I agreed they told me to email @gmail.com. it didn't strike me until after I emailed agreeing to add the 300 in the package with my item that paypal always ended with paypal.com not gmail.com so then they sent me a confirmation email from this same email saying the 500 was deposited and that I would have to send a picture of receipt for verification of the gift card. They made it seem extremely real but the thing is I'm not falling for this because I wasnt about to go buy this with my money and sending it out before I recieved a payment of the amount for EVERYTHING. I called and it was someone foreign and then I hung up. The same guy called from a restricted number and said they were from pay pal services trying to get me to go ship my items out along with this gift card that is supposedly a gift for someone and the payment would he posted to my account after. People please dont fall for this type of **bleep**. I honestly thought maybe it was some grandma trying to send someone a gift and wanted to add something extra and I didnt mind going to extra mile to do it for them. But dont unless you recieve the payment and think about the email addresses and look up the original email address for whichever company they want you to verify with.

Cant the scammers just rewrite their fake payment notices to make it look like the notification comes from Adyen instead of from Paypal?
Adyen doesn't send any notifications to sellers. Ebay does. So a faked one would be phonier than those bogus PAYPAL emails. Honestly I never understood how sellers could fall for this in the first place. Neither payment processor generates the "ship now" message from eBay once the payment has been recorded. And for the life of me I don't get how any seller would think of shipping without it.
I guess some of them think the notification bell is just a pretty decoration.
"Adyen doesn't send any notifications to sellers. "
The scam will still work because the same person that would blindly follow orders to text or to buy a gift card and send the numbers to the "buyer" would also follow the instructions in a spoofed email.
How would they know that Adyen doesn't send messages? They don't.
How many are even aware of Ayden? And even if they are in managed payments, the target may still believe a spoofed paypal email if not Ayden.
So yes, scammers play on the ignorance of their targets. Especially new sellers. There will always be a percentage of people that fall for it. Scammers play the odds.
"Honestly I never understood how sellers could fall for this in the first place."
I don't either, but they do. There is and always will be, a percentage of people that are trusting when they should be cautious , and unaware when they should be vigilant.

Right but the fake Paypal notices were pure fiction as well and yet they LOOKED genuine enough to fool the recipient into shipping before getting any notification of a payment. The scammers will simply move on to improvise whatever looks good as a fake notification message from Ebay or Adyen instead.
The key is newbie seller education against scams - which Ebay is dead set against because that would force them to admit that maybe selling that new smartphone here as a first sale would not be the greatest idea.

I got hit with this yesterday. I am a new seller and a user submitted an offer on an item within minutes after I listed it (offer was higher than my buy it now!). I started an email conversation and they pulled the gift card scam thing out. See attachments.
I didn't fall for it but now what do I do about the transaction? It is still pending payment which will probably never come. If I cancel it, this will put a defective transaction on my profile which hurts my rating because I don't have any feedback as a seller yet. Any recommendations?
