Re: SLOW SALES!

Sometimes it helps to take a break too.  Put your store on "time off" and just take a breather.  Let your soul heal.  Plus if you do it for a couple weeks or more you'll usually get a bump when you turn it back on.  I'm getting ready for my yearly break in a few weeks.  It can't come soon enough.  I'm done with '24.

Re: SLOW SALES!

The "something is off..." is the quarterly update that just happened, and it's internal, as usual, meaning, there is nothing anyone can do about it. It isn't your items, listings, prices, or lack of new listing/promoting (like others love to say it is). They messed with PL's in the update, they changed pages in the Advertising and Traffic. Their disclosure of what updates actually and fully include are non-existent and so can only imagine what they messed with and changed. It's IT related and until they decide to look into it and "fix" things sales for many will be dismal.

This is not uncommon after a quarterly update, it's happened before, but this is likely the worst in past year. From someone who gets sales every single day, there have been no sales for me since Nov 5th and had 3 sales since the update took affect.

@movieman630 most I have talked to all have figures in the negative for past week, even the ones who have some green positive have a overall decrease from normal. In the past when they mess with PL's, you were able to end and create new campaigns which would "fix" a lot of the lack of views/sales, I did that, only been 2 days now but resulted in nothing, but 2 days isn't a ton of time yet. Usually, if can get impressions back up into positive green sales should follow...we'll see.

Re: SLOW SALES!

You spoke straight to my heart!  I work on ebay 10 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Now grant you, I might be slower in doing things since I'm in my 60's but my drive and ambition to succeed is still there.  Besides, this is my income (or was my income) depending on how you look at it.  I'm happy for those that are having success in selling and have banner sales but there are those out here including myself that has seen a drastic decline.  I've been told, nobody wants to buy your stuff, your price is too high, your shipping is too high, etc.  The fact remains though that this is a full time (plus overtime) work for me and instead of seeing results, I'm seeing the exact opposite.  I have kept track of year over year ups and downs and I'm definitely spiraling toward the pit of no return.  Still hanging in there though.  I'm at a crossroads where I need to decide whether to move up on the store level to get more free listings for the categories that I list in and are not covered under the free category.  I'm really torn on what to do.  For now, I keep pounding away, day after day, week after week, believing in myself the hope that things turn around.

Re: SLOW SALES!

My October was great, best month all year and up 30% over last October.  Then November happened and things tanked. Like most of you I have made no changes, same listings, adding new ones daily, promoting, running sales etc.

Re: SLOW SALES!

It really does feel like a "race to the bottom" every time they "update" something.  They're literally helping us all into oblivion.

It really does feel as if they're putting more and more hurdles in between sellers and buyers.  It's becoming a rat maze just to get buyers to an item.  No more does a simple search get them right to your door.  If it were that simple a lot of us would see organic growth the more time we invest in our stores.

Now they want us to invest our time to manage our stores for less traffic, less impressions, less healthy competition, less quality, less sales and less profit.

Something needs to drastically change at ebay.  This isn't doing any of us any good, especially them and their shareholders.

Take my shackles off.  Let's just make some money!!

Something definitely is off but I have no idea what it would even be.  I have over 18,000 items in my store, list each day, promote, etc.  My sales compared to last year's sales for this month are down 67%.  It's a huge drop and I'm questioning my sanity for even keeping up with this.  I don't really want to change to another sales venue as I have invested years of time and effort into what I have here.  I'm hopeful that things will pick up soon.  I wish the best for sales for everyone.

All the Karmela voters are busy packing up in preparation to leave the country.

But on a serious note; Sales for what I make/sell has fallen off about 30% this year, compared the last 3 years but about even 'pre-Covid' (2019)........so??

Re: SLOW SALES!

My traffic looks very steady, but sales revenue is down. Sales conversion rate being down by 5.5% is concerning.

I do have a "return" where the customer said the item was not as described (despite the pictures and the description clearly showing the flaws with the item - link to item), and also that ebay closed the case in my favor because the buyer never ended up returning the item. I feel like our accounts are "punished" when a customer returns something "not as described" but there's no way to correlate the two. I also LOL'ed when I saw that ebay shows that because of 1 return out of 5,239 transactions that my rating is approaching "high".

Re: SLOW SALES!

Just a quick note ... I see a couple of our fellow sellers mention that their sales are great right now. I don't doubt that they are. There are times that my sales are amazing and I see sellers posting in the community or elsewhere online that their sales are very dismal. I generally look at how long they've had an account for, how many items they're selling, take a glance at the number of listings, and then drill down to see the quality of the listings. Sometimes I see things that are blatantly obvious why their sales would be low, and then some times I see a seller that looks similar to my account with nice, descriptive listings that are actually part of a business instead of a side hustle.

Regardless, I feel like ebay has a few things going on behind-the-scenes that inadvertently hurt sellers. Not maliciously nor intentionally. For one, I feel like they might put too much weight on our service metrics. I think my screenshot above might show that. It seems like when I have a "negative" customer experience, sales and/or revenue go down. It's not fair that I have 1 return out of 5,239 transactions above and they're telling me that my ratings are negatively reaching a "high" level. Seriously? As a consumer, do you know how many damaged items I receive from big box online and brick-and-mortar retailers on a regular basis? 1 out of 5,239 is freakin' amazing! I work my butt off to keep my customers happy and to keep that number low.

The other thing that seems off is it seems like ebay regularly directs traffic to certain sellers. Maybe it's new sellers. Maybe it's older accounts that specialize in selling a certain product. Or maybe on top of that it's just plain seasonal (I'd argue that the toys I sell mostly are NOT seasonal since they are more collector oriented toys, but Christmas is definitely a big boost, but with consistent sales throughout the year ... if that makes sense). However, if ebay is "directing" traffic to certain sellers, the sellers that they are NOT directing traffic to would see a loss of sales. My "traffic" report above would stand in contrast to what I'm saying since it shows a fairly steady stream of traffic. However, the conversion rate is down. Perhaps ebay is directing the wrong buyers to my store? Maybe those stats are not real or are not accurate? Who knows.

I don't think ebay is doing anything I mentioned above maliciously. I think they've got some programming going on that matches up buyers with items that match their search. That's it. It's not a perfect science. Sure, the algorithm could be tweaked one way or another. But I don't think in the least that there's a line of code that says "hey send traffic away from this seller for x, y and z reasons because we need to send traffic to this other seller".  I would argue that ebay should just show the darn items that match a buyer's search without any algorithms behind the scenes. However, ebay also makes money off us for "promoting" items (if you play that game, which I don't), our subscriptions, listing fees, etc. There are other ways to make money off sellers instead of just collecting a percentage fee.

The issue I'm concerned about the most is if ebay is directing customers to a rotating group of sellers, then I'm assuming they're doing that to keep sellers "happy". Send buyers to these sellers ... they make sales. Now we need to send buyers to group #2 sellers so they make sales. And so on. Everyone gets a turn at making sales and then not making sales. The real concern is that if there were enough buyers to match the number of items being sold from various sellers, they wouldn't need to do that other than to send enough business to new sellers so that they get a taste of what's going on instead of just sending traffic to long established sellers who have been doing this for over 20 years.

I'm a seller who has been doing this for over 20 years. I do not believe in conspiracy theories. I do not think ebay is evil or out to run businesses into the ground. They are a large company made up with a lot of folks. Mistakes happen (i.e. new bugs that  get introduced with quarterly updates). Things fall through the cracks. But they're a business. They make the most money when they take a cut of what we sell. That's what drives this whole business ultimately.

On that note, I wonder if ebay has ever considered having a small focus group of sellers (5 to 10) that they talk to regularly update upcoming updates, potential ideas for a year or so down the road, and talking about problems that the small group of sellers is experiencing (or ideas that they might have). It'd be beneficial for ebay to have if they don't already do that.

Long ramble. Sorry. Just wanted to share some ideas about where I think the issue is and a possible solution. And to clarify that I don't buy into ebay conspiracy theories, though I do think things are going on behind-the-scenes that aren't helpful and should be addressed. Hopefully I was able to convey that.

Re: SLOW SALES!

I too have been here for over 20 years and not once have they ever asked my opinion about anything.  Never once have I been asked to fill out a questionnaire or anything.  I agree 100% that they could benefit greatly by just reaching out for input.  But I disagree that they don't "play games" with us.  We're treated like children, we're punished all the time, as you mentioned about your stats.

Unfortunately I don't see it getting better, I only see thing getting worse because much like government, they're quick to implement something, but not so quick to shut things down or re calibrate.

They'll fix a bridge once it collapses.
