I am trying to figure out why the children's book  "Little Black Sambo" is now a book that I am not allowed to sell on Ebay.  It is not a racist book at all.  I read it as a very young child and I still have a copy of that book.  Is it because of the word "black"?

Re: Removed Listing

Interesting, I had to look it up (nostalgia - we ate at the one in Palm Springs when we vacationed there as I was growing up).

All of them closed except the original, in Santa Barbara - and they kept the name until just this month. They just changed it this month due to recent events.

Re: Removed Listing

I think "Sambo" is the reason it was taken down.

Re: Removed Listing

The name "Sambo" was taken from portions of the names of it's founders, Sam Battistone Sr. and Newell Bohnett.

Re: Removed Listing

I think we are all getting too sensitive and legitimate history is being hidden and forgotten.

Re: Removed Listing

I ate there often as a child! I totally remember it...the tiger spinning until it turned to butter..strange times.

Re: Removed Listing

Ever hear the song " Colored Spade" from the movie "Hair"? It's on Youtube.

Re: Removed Listing

It's ironic given that the original story was about a little Indian (the country) boy.

I mean how many tigers do you see in the US?

Re: Removed Listing

It can be how you post it too. I had a very racist postcard from Florida 1950's, (showed a racist caricature of an African American child whose bathing suit was being grabbed by an alligator & the speech bubble showed a racist depiction of uneducated speech), I listed it in vintage postcards and included that it was RACIST in the title.  Then I put a disclaimer in my listing that as a vintage post card it reflected racist and derogatory depictions of African Americans from the past and did not reflect our personal beliefs but was presented as a indication/refection of past attitudes here in the USA. It was purchased for a museum on racism....and was the highest selling post card I've ever listed on ebay!

Sambo is a derogatory term and LBS has been added to a list of books of having racist and derogatory depictions of African Americans.  So you have to be very careful in how you present any items that have a racist connotation or history to them. Context can be important.

Re: Removed Listing

Strange is an understatement. I am surprised there are any historical items still posted at all. There appears to be a desire to erase a large segment of American History.

Re: Removed Listing

I don't believe eBay does extensive monitoring, if they do any at all, of the postings. Selling alcohol, the drinkable kind, is against eBay policy in addition to a number of other federal, state and probably local laws. However, I have seen a lot of collectible whiskey bottles listed and sold on eBay that were/are listed as full and or having the original tax seal intact. Seller gets around the rules and law by simply stating they cannot attest to the contents of the bottle and they are selling the bottle and not the contents. Interesting approach.
