I sold an item and shipped it with USPS and signature required. Apparently the buyer isn't home during the delivery attempt so he asked me to put a hold on the package. How do I do that?

The buyer needs to call his post office. He/she can pick it up there.

Not your issue. Buyers issue

In the note he received from the carrier when delivery was attempted, he was told what to do to retrieve his package. This is for him to do, not you.

Hi @robbymeier This actually is your problem. Why did you make it signature required? You haven't sold anything on this account that requires a signature. The only item you've sold recently was far under the requirement for a signature, and says it will be shipped Economy Shipping (USPS Parcel Select Ground) which doesn't require a signature. Nothing in the listing says it will be sent signature required. A 10 day handling time indicates drop shipping, or at the least listing items that are not actually in your possession. Unless you're actively courting bad feedback, you should do everything you can to help your buyer. If the item is returned to you by USPS, you should re-ship at your cost, and coordinate with your buyer that no signature will be required. Good luck!

You dont - the buyer does. He can mark the pickup notice he received to ask them to hold it at his post office. (Our local one does that automatically if the first delivery fails. The note they leave instructs you to bring it in for pickup and gives you something like 15 days to do it.)
Incidentally - nothing you have sold recently and nothing you have listed now comes anywhere close to the Ebay minimum of $750 for requiring Signature confirmation. Spare yourself the expense and spare your buyer the aggravation. Delivery confirmation is included free with tracking and gives you all the same seller protection against an Item not received dispute for any sale up to $750.
